April 11, 2012: Today, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced that the agency will be updating Propecia labels to include more warnings about the risk of persistent, severe sexual side effects that do not resolve when Propecia is discontinued. After receiving hundreds of reports from men who were injured by Propecia, the new labels will warn about the possible risk of libido disorders, orgasm disorders, and ejaculation disorders. The FDA will also warn that while men are taking Propecia, they may have fertility problems and decreased quality of semen.
Propecia is an anti-baldness drug that contains 1-mg finasteride, a drug that was originally developed as a treatment for enlarged male prostate, sold under that brand-name Proscar in 5-mg doses. One known side effect of finasteride is adverse effects to a man’s sexual health.
The warning label on Propecia states:
A small number of men experienced certain sexual side effects. These men reported one of more of the following: less desire for sex; difficulty in achieving erection; and, a decrease in the amount of semen. Each of these side effects occurred in less than 2% of men. These side effects went away in men who stopped taking Propecia.
Propecia treats baldness by inhibiting the enzyme 5-alpha reductase, which limits the body’s ability to convert testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT). While a man is taking Propecia, it makes massive changes to a man’s endocrine system. For men who already have low testosterone or are simply sensitive to testosterone, a massive drop in these hormones can cause sexual dysfunction and physical changes. In the drug warning information, the drug manufacturers assure men that once the stop taking Propecia, side effects will go away. However, more and more men are reporting that their symptoms did not go away. In some men, side effects grew even worse.
Propecia and Endocrine System Failure
Some men who use Propecia may suffer sexual dysfunction. When they stop using Propecia, they expect that their sexual health will return. Unfortunately, more and more men are reporting that when they stopped Propecia, they suffered a complete failure of the endocrine system, resulting in persistent changes to their hormonal health.
The endocrine system is a complex biological system consisting of several glands located throughout the body, which are responsible for producing hormones and regulating levels of these hormones and other chemicals inside the body. The hormonal system is very complicated, and many hormones work together to regulate normal physical and sexual health. Changing one ingredient in the system can have a massive change on the system as a whole.
Men who have suffered an endocrine system crash after using Propecia or Proscar are calling their disorder Post-Finasteride Syndrome. For most men, after they stopped using finasteride, normal sexual health returned. However, for a small subset of men taking finasteride, a few weeks after they stopped the drug, they noticed that their sexual dysfunction returned. They suffered a complete failure of the endocrine system. Hormone levels dropped dramatically.
After the endocrine system crash, these men suffered persistent side effects that harmed their physical, sexual, and mental health. Even more troubling, some men have reported that symptoms grow worse over time, and more symptoms emerge. This is symptomatic of the body’s inability to regulate testosterone versus estrogen. In some men, the massive drop in male sex hormones triggers increased production of estrogen, a female sex hormone. Physical changes may include growth of male breast tissue (gynecomastia) and female-pattern weight gain. Sexual problems may include erectile dysfunction, loss of libido, genital shrinkage, and more.
