Texas Propecia Lawyer for Body Disfigurement

More and more men are reporting body disfigurement and other severe side effects after using Propecia (finasteride). This medication stops hair loss caused by male pattern baldness by making dramatic changes to a man’s hormones. Physical changes after using finasteride may include genital shrinkage, enlargement of male breasts (gynecomastia), atrophy of muscles, female-pattern weight gain, and physical disfigurement of the male genitals. These physical changes can cause psychological harm and sexual dysfunction.

Propecia Overview

Propecia (finasteride) is a prescription medication that has been used by millions of men to treat male pattern baldness. Men with male pattern baldness have a genetic trait that causes their hair follicles to slowly shut down after exposure to dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a hormone in the body. Propecia inhibits an enzyme that converts testosterone into DHT, causing a 75-80% drop in DHT levels.

Because Propecia makes massive changes to hormone levels in a man’s body, it can have some unintended side effects. The safety information for Propecia warns:

A small number of men experienced certain sexual side effects. these men reported one of more of the following: less desire for sex; difficulty in achieving erection; and, a decrease in the amount of semen. Each of these side effects occurred in less than 2% of men. These side effects went away in men who stopped taking Propecia

Unfortunately, a growing subset of men who used Propecia have complained that their symptoms did not go away when they stopped taking Propecia. In fact, some men have reported symptoms that last months, years, or indefinitely.

Propecia and Body Disfigurement

Types of body disfigurement may include, but are not limited to:

  • Gynecomastia (growth of male breast tissue)
  • Genital shrinkage
  • Female-pattern weight gan
  • Muscle atrophy
  • Penile fibrosis
  • Physical changes in the penis size, shape, or curvature

How could Propecia or finasteride cause a change in physical appearance? In some men, a massive drop in male sex hormones leads to an increased amount of female sex hormones (estrogen). One symptom of this hormonal imbalance is enlarged male breast tissue, a condition known as gynecomastia. High estrogen levels can also cause muscles to atrophy, and female-pattern fat deposits, especially around the waist, hips, and thighs.

Testosterone and DHT play a vital role in maintaining genital tissue structures. When levels of these hormones crashes, the physical appearance of these tissues may change. There is growing evidence that finasteride can cause the male genitals to shrink. Finasteride was originally developed as a way to shrink enlarged prostate, sold in 5-mg doses under the brand-name Proscar. Increasing numbers of men are reporting that their genitals became smaller and thinner. A severe type of genital disfigurement is a condition called penile fibrosis, in which irregular collagen causes pain in the testicles, curvature of the penis, and irregular hardening.

Psychological distress and anxiety caused by a physical disfigurement may be immeasurable. If it is possible to correct a body disfigurement using surgery, medical expenses may be significant. However, severe disfigurements may be permanent. If you wish to seek justice by filing a Propecia lawsuit, we may be able to help you get financial compensation for your injuries.
