FDA Issues Warning for 26 Eye Drop Products
In October 2023, the FDA issued a Safety Warning for 26 eye drop products that may cause severe eye infections, vision loss or blindness. The eye drop brand-names include:
- CVS Health
- Leader (Cardinal Health)
- Rugby (Cardinal Health)
- Rite Aid
- Target Up & Up
- Velocity Pharma
- Walmart Equate
What is the Problem?
FDA inspectors found dangerous bacteria in “critical drug production areas” of a manufacturing facility that supplies eye drops to CVS, Target, Walmart, and other major stores. People who use these eye drops could develop a severe, life-threatening eye infection. The infection could potentially cause vision loss, permanent blindness, or spread to other parts of the body and cause a deadly infection.
Are Your Eye Drops Being Recalled?
The FDA has published a list of eye drops that consumers should not use. The list was updated on October 30 to also include Equate Hydration PF Lubricant Eye Drop (10 mL) from Walmart.
