Rugby Eye Drops Recalled After Reports of Eye Injuries

On October 31, 2023, The Harvard Drug Group LLC (doing business as Major® Pharmaceutical and Rugby® Laboratories) announced a recall for two types of Rugby® eye drops that may cause severe eye infections, which could cause vision loss, blindness, or other complications.

What Eye Drops Were Recalled?

The recall involves two types of Rugby® eye drop products (all lots) that were sold nationwide after June 2021:

  • Rugby® Lubricating Eye Drops: (Polyvinyl Alcohol, 1.4%)
  • Rugby® Lubricating Tears Eye Drops: (Dextran/Hypromellose, 0.1%/0.3%)

How Many People Were Injured?

According to the Rugby eye drop recall, the manufacturer received three (3) reports of adverse events, including vision loss, vision blurriness, and burning eyes from people who used the eye drops.

What Happened?

The FDA issued a Safety Warning for 27 eye drop products that were sold at CVS, Target, Walmart, Rite Aid and other stores. Using these eye drops could result in eye infections, vision loss, or blindness, according to the FDA.

Eye Drops Were Made in “Insanitary” Facility

The warning was issued after FDA inspectors found “insanitary conditions” in the manufacturing facility, including positive test results for bacteria in “critical drug production areas” of the facility where the eye drops were made, according to the warning.

What is the Risk?

Eye drops are more risky than most over-the-counter drugs because they are applied directly to the eyes. If the eye drops are not sterile, bacteria can cause a severe or even life-threatening infection. This infection could cause vision loss, blindness, or spread to the body and cause a deadly bloodstream infection or other complications.

Deadly Infection Outbreak Linked to Eye Drops

Just a few months before the FDA warning, a deadly outbreak of eye infections was linked to EzriCare Artificial Tears. Four people died when the eye infection spread to their bloodstream, and at least 81 people in multiple states were infected, including 14 people who lost their vision. The outbreak was linked to antibiotic-resistant Pseudomonas bacteria in the eye drops.

Symptoms of an Eye Infection

  • Yellow, green or clear discharge from the eye
  • Pain or discomfort
  • Redness
  • Increased sensitivity to light
  • Blurry vision
