Target Recalls Up&Up Eye Drops for Infection Risk

In October 2023, Target announced a recall for certain Up&Up Eye Drops due to a risk of severe eye infections, vision loss and blindness.

What Eye Drops Were Recalled?

The recall involves the following Target Up&Up Eye Drops:

  • Target Up&Up Dry Eye Relief Lubricant Eye Drops 30 ml: Polyethylene Glycol 400 0.4% & Propylene Glycol 0.3% Eye Drops
  • Target Up&Up Extreme Relief Dry Eye 15 ml (single pack): Polyethylene Glycol 400 0.4% & Propylene Glycol 0.3% Eye Drops
  • Target Up&Up Extreme Relief Dry Eye 30 ml (twin pack): Carboxymethylcellulose Sodium Eye Drops 0.5% w/v

What Happened?

The recall was issued after the FDA issued a Safety Warning for 27 eye drop products that were manufactured in “insanitary conditions.” The FDA found bacteria in “critical drug production areas” of the manufacturing facility.

Were Any Eye Infections Reported?

Six injuries were linked to the eye drops in the FDA warning, specifically Leader® Eye Drops and Rugby® Eye Drops. The injuries included vision loss, vision blurriness, burning eyes, and more.

What is the Risk?

Eye drops must be sterile because they are applied directly to the eyes, which poses a higher safety risk than many other over-the-counter products. When eye drops are not sterile, people who use them can develop severe infections, vision loss, blindness, or invasive infections that spread into the blood or body.

Deadly Infection Outbreaks Linked to Eye Drops

Deadly infection outbreaks have been linked to contaminated eye drops. In May 2023, the FDA issued a warning for EzriCare Artificial Tears, a type of lubricating eye drop product that was found to be contaminated with antibiotic-resistant super-bacteria called Pseudomonas. At least 4 people died and 81 other people developed severe infections or lost their vision permanently.

Is My Eye Infected?

Eye infection symptoms may include:

  • Yellow, green, or clear discharge from the eye
  • Eye pain or discomfort
  • Redness of the eye or eyelid
  • Feeling of something in your eye (foreign body sensation)
  • Increased sensitivity to light
  • Blurry vision
