FDA Warning for 27 Eye Drop Products

The recall follows a Safety Warning from the FDA against using 27 eye drop products, including eye drops sold by CVS, Walmart, Target, Rite Aid, and more.

How Many People Were Injured?

At least 6 adverse events were reported in recall notices for Rugby® and Leader® eye drops. The reported injuries included vision loss, vision blurriness, and burning eyes, according to the recalls.

What Happened?

These eye drops may not be sterile because they were manufactured under “insanitary conditions,” according to the FDA. Inspectors also found positive swabs for bacteria in “critical drug production areas” of the facility where the eye drops were made.

What is the Risk?

The FDA requires eye drops to be sterile because they are applied directly to the eyes, which poses a higher risk than many other over-the-counter products. Bacteria in contaminated eye drops may cause a severe infection that leads to vision loss, blindness, or even death.

Deadly Infection Outbreak Linked to Eye Drops

In early 2023, a deadly outbreak of Pseudomonas infections was linked to EzriCare Artificial Tears, a type of lubricating eye drop product. At least 4 people died when the antibiotic-resistant infection spread to their bloodstream. Another 81 people were infected, including 14 people who suffered vision loss or permanent blindness.

What Should I Do?

Health officials are urging anyone who used these recalled eye drops to seek medical attention immediately if they develop symptoms of an infection. These symptoms may include:

  • Eye pain or discomfort
  • Discharge (yellow, sticky pus)
  • Blurry vision
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Eye redness or swelling of the eye or eyelid
  • And more
