Velocity Pharma Eye Drops Recalled for Infection Risk
In October 2023, the FDA issued a Safety Warning for Velocity Pharma Eye Drops that may cause eye infections, vision loss, or permanent blindness.
What Happened?
The FDA published a list of 27 eye drop products that consumers should NOT use due to a risk of eye infections, including products that were sold by Velocity Pharma, CVS, Rite Aid, Target, and Walmart.
These eye drops may have also been sold online and in international markets, such as the British Virgin Islands.
Were My Eye Drops Recalled?
The FDA warned consumers not to use Velocity Pharma® Lubricant Eye Drops 10-ml (Propylene Glycol 0.6%) with NDC 76168-502-30. The eye drops were sold in a triple-pack by Velocity Pharma LLC.
What Happened?
FDA inspectors visited the manufacturing facility and found “insanitary conditions” that could result in contamination of the eye drops. They also found positive swabs for bacteria in “critical drug production areas” of the facility, according to the safety warning.
The FDA requires eye drops to be sterile because they are applied directly to the eyes, which bypasses some of the body’s natural defenses against infections. These infections can be deadly. For example, in early 2023, EzriCare Eye Drops were linked to a deadly outbreak of infections.
What is the Risk?
Eye injuries were linked to other eye drops that were supplied by Velocity Pharma LLC, including 3 adverse events from Rugby® Eye Drops and another 3 injuries linked to Leader® eye drops. The injuries included vision loss, blurry vision, and burning eyes.
Signs & Symptoms of an Eye Infection

- Yellow, green, or clear discharge from the eye
- Eye pain or discomfort
- Redness of the eye or eyelid
- Feeling of something in your eye (foreign body sensation)
- Increased sensitivity to light
- Blurry vision
