Weight-Loss Drug Stomach Paralysis Lawsuits

In August 2023, a stomach paralysis lawsuit was filed by a woman from Louisiana who claims that the diabetes and weight-loss drugs Ozempic and Mounjaro caused a condition called gastroparesis.

The drug-makers Novo Nordisk and Eli Lilly are now facing lawsuits from hundreds of people who were diagnosed with stomach paralysis and other severe gastrointestinal side effects after taking weight-loss drugs.

What Happened?

The plaintiff, Jaclyn B., said her doctor initially prescribed Ozempic for the treatment of type-2 diabetes. She took the medication for about a year before switching to Mounjaro.

According to her lawsuit, the medications paralyzed her stomach and caused a serious condition called gastroparesis. Her nausea and vomiting were so severe that she lost teeth and had to be hospitalized.

What Do Lawsuits Claim?

Her lawsuit accuses drug-makers Novo Nordisk and Eli Lilly of failing to warn her about the risk of gastroparesis and other side effects.

The drug labels do warn about delayed gastric emptying and problems absorbing oral medications, but fail to convey the seriousness of gastroparesis or other digestive side effects, her lawsuit claims.

The lawsuit was filed on August 2, 2023 in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Louisiana (Lake Charles Division) — Case No. 2:23-cv-01020.

Diabetes Drugs for Weight-Loss

Glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) is a hormone that is produced by the gut and released when you eat food. It tells the body to feel full, release insulin, and slow down digestion.

What is Gastroparesis?

Gastroparesis, or “stomach paralysis,” causes very slow emptying of food from the stomach into the intestines. In some cases, the movement of food stops completely and causes a blockage.

Stomach Paralysis Symptoms

  • Feeling full after eating only a few bites of food
  • Feeling full long after you have eaten
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Belching
  • Bloating
  • Abdominal pain
  • Loss of appetite

Long-Term Complications of Stomach Paralysis

Having a paralyzed stomach can cause serious long-term complications like dehydration due to excessive vomiting, malnutrition, or unhealthy weight-loss. Undigested food can also form a solid mass called a bezoar, which can block the digestive tract.

Study Links Diabetes Drugs and Gastroparesis

Lawsuits for people with stomach paralysis claim that drug-makers should have known about the risk due to early studies linking diabetes drugs and gastroparesis.

For example, researchers warned in a study from August 2020 that the symptoms of diabetic gastroparesis could worsen for patients who take weight-loss drugs like Ozempic and Mounjaro:

“Patients do not know they have diabetic gastroparesis until they are put on a glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist such as … semaglutide … to manage their blood glucose. … This class of drugs can exacerbate the symptoms of diabetic gastroparesis.”
