Mounjaro Lawsuit Filed by Woman With Stomach Paralysis
In August 2023, Novo Nordisk was sued by a woman who claims that her stomach was paralyzed by Mounjaro and Ozempic.
What Happened?
Novo Nordisk is facing a lawsuit from a woman who claims that the drug-maker inadequately warned about “delayed gastric emptying” from Mounjaro on the Prescribing Information, but failed to fully inform doctors and patients about the risk of stomach paralysis (gastroparesis), extreme nausea and vomiting, and other side effects.
Her Mounjaro Stomach Paralysis Lawsuit was filed on August 2, 2023 in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Louisiana (Lake Charles Division) — Case 2:23-cv-01020.
How Does Mounjaro Work?
Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is in the same class of medications as Ozempic (semaglutide). They are both once-weekly injection medications that are used to control blood-sugar levels in adults with type-2 diabetes.
They are both GLP-1 receptor agonists, which means that they work by mimicking hormones in the brain and digestive system that regulate appetite, feeling of fullness, and the movement of food through the stomach and intestines. People who use Mounjaro feel full longer and eat less food, which helps with weight-loss — but if food moves too slowly or stops moving out of the stomach, serious problems occur.
What is Gastroparesis?
Gastroparesis, also known as “paralyzed stomach” or “delayed gastric emptying,” occurs when the stomach is too slow to empty food into the intestines. It can cause extreme vomiting, nausea, and other health problems. One of the most serious risks is a life-threatening blockage in the stomach or intestines due to hard masses of half-digested food.
FDA Evaluating Reports of Stomach Paralysis
In July 2023, the FDA told CNN that they were evaluating reports of stomach paralysis with diabetes medications like Ozempic — including cases that did not improve after stopping the medication:
“The FDA has received reports of gastroparesis with semaglutide and liraglutide, some of which documented the adverse event as not recovered after discontinuation of the respective product at the time of the report.”
Can Mounjaro Cause an Intestinal Obstruction?
The FDA is also evaluating reports of intestinal obstruction from Mounjaro, Ozempic, and other GLP-1 receptor agonists. Source: “April – June 2022 | Potential Signals of Serious Risks/New Safety Information Identified by the FDA Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS)”.
An intestinal obstruction occurs when something blocks the intestines, preventing the digestion of food and the movement of food. It can be a complication of stomach paralysis, as a result of a “bezoar,” which is a hardened masses of half-digested food.
Stomach Paralysis and Type-2 Diabetes
Stomach paralysis can be a complication of type-2 diabetes. Over time, high blood-sugar levels due to uncontrolled diabetes can permanently damage the nerves in the stomach and slow down digestion. This can make it hard to determine whether stomach paralysis is a side effect of Mounjaro, or diabetes itself.
Symptoms of Stomach Paralysis
According to the Mayo Clinic, the symptoms of stomach paralysis may include:
- Vomiting
- Nausea
- Bloating
- Abdominal (stomach) pain
- Feeling full after eating just a few bites of food
- Vomiting undigested food
- Acid reflux
- Changes in blood-sugar levels
- Poor appetite
- Weight-loss
- Malnutrition
