Lawsuits Filed by People With Stomach Paralysis

People with type-2 diabetes who took medications like Saxenda may develop stomach paralysis, according to recent lawsuits.

These lawsuits accuse pharmaceutical companies of downplaying the risk of being hospitalized with stomach paralysis, which may cause severe symptoms of nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and more.

What is Saxenda?

Saxenda is an injection medication that is used for type-2 diabetes and weight-loss. Saxenda is manufactured by Novo Nordisk and it was approved by the FDA in December 2014.

Saxenda is a pre-filled injection pen that contains 3-mg of liraglutide, a GLP-1 diabetes drug. Patients administer the injection once a day in their stomach area, upper arm, or upper leg.

How Does Saxenda Treat Type-2 Diabetes?

Saxenda contains liragludie, which is the same active ingredient as another diabetes drug called Victoza. Both medications help treat diabetes by mimicking a hormone called GLP-1.

The body naturally releases the GLP-1 hormone in response to food. When a person injects Saxenda, it tells the pancreas to produce more insulin, which helps reduce blood-sugar levels. Saxenda also slows down digestion, which helps people feel full longer, and eat less food.

Saxenda Can Slow Down Gastric Emptying

Saxenda can cause “delayed gastric emptying,” which means that it slows down the movement of food from the stomach to the intestines.

The Saxenda Prescribing Information includes a warning about stomach paralysis, which is also known as gastroparesis:

“Gastroparesis: SAXENDA® slows gastric emptying. SAXENDA® has not been studied in patients with pre-existing gastroparesis.”

Delayed gastric emptying may also cause problems when patients are taking oral medications, because these medications may not be digested and absorbed by the body as quickly as they normally would.

According to the label: “SAXENDA® causes a delay of gastric emptying, and thereby has the potential to impact the absorption of concomitantly administered oral medications.”

What is Stomach Paralysis?

Stomach paralysis occurs when the stomach is abnormally slow to digest food and move it into the intestines. It is also called “delayed gastric emptying” or “gastroparesis.”

What Happens?

Type-2 diabetes is a major risk-factor for stomach paralysis. Over time, uncontrolled high blood-sugar levels can cause permanent damage to the nerves that control muscles in the stomach. This weakens the stomach muscles and slows down digestion.

Diabetics May Not Know They Have Stomach Paralysis

Diabetes is the most common cause of stomach paralysis, but it does not always cause symptoms.

Patients may not be properly diagnosed until they start a medication like Saxenda, which dramatically worsens the symptoms of stomach paralysis, causing them to be hospitalized with severe nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, and other symptoms.

Severe Complications of Stomach Paralysis

In very severe gases of stomach paralysis, partially-digested food sits in the stomach for much too long, and creates a hard mass of food called a “bezoar.” This can cause serious nausea, vomiting, and even a life-threatening blockage in the stomach, or intestinal obstruction.
