Stomach Paralysis Lawsuits Filed Against Pharmaceutical Companies

Novo Nordisk and other pharmaceutical companies are facing lawsuits from people who developed stomach paralysis and other severe side effects from diabetes medications.

What Do Lawsuits Claim?

Lawsuits claim that drug-makers should have known about the risk of stomach paralysis from drugs like Rybelsus, but failed to adequately warn patients or doctors about the severity of this side effect.

In some lawsuits, the plaintiffs claim they had to be hospitalized after developing severe nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and other symptoms of stomach paralysis.

What is Rybelsus?

Rybelsus® (semaglutide) is a once-daily pill that is used to control the symptoms of type-2 diabetes. It was developed by Novo Nordisk and approved by the FDA on September 20, 2019.

Rybelsus contains semaglutide, which is the same active ingredient in the injection diabetes drugs Ozempic® and Wegovy®. The difference is that these medications are injected once a week, whereas Rybelsus is taken as a once-daily pill (7-mg or 14-mg) on an empty stomach.

How Does Rybelsus Treat Diabetes?

Rybelsus belongs to a class of diabetes medications that mimic a hormone called GLP-1. It was the first GLP-1 medication in a pill.

GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1) is a natural human hormone that has several effects in the digestive system and the brain.

When a person takes Rybelsus, it helps control blood-sugar levels by telling the body to release more insulin in response to food, limits the amount of glucose released by the liver. Rybelsus may also work in the brain to reduce appetite and make people feel full longer, which is why studies have shown that it can help obese patients lose weight.

Rybelsus May Slow Down Gastric Emptying

Delayed gastric emptying is listed on the potential side effects of Rybelsus, according to the Prescribing Information: “RYBELSUS® causes a delay of gastric emptying, and thereby has the potential to impact the absorption of other oral medications.”

What is Stomach Paralysis?

Stomach paralysis is also called “delayed gastric emptying” or “gastroparesis.” It occurs when food does not move quickly enough from the stomach into the intestines.

Does Stomach Paralysis Always Cause Symptoms?

No. Mild cases of stomach paralysis may not cause any symptoms, which is why some people do not realize they have this condition.

In severe cases, patients may need to be hospitalized due to extreme nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, or blockages in the stomach and intestines that are caused by hard masses of partly-digested food called “bezoars.”
