These supplement shakes were not sold in stores. Instead, they were given to people in hospitals, nursing homes, and long-term care facilities nationwide. In Texas, at least 6 people got sick and 1 person died.

Have Any Lawsuits Been Filed?

However, it is possible that victims would be eligible to file a food poisoning lawsuit. They may be able to seek justice or financial compensation for their illness, pain and suffering, medical bills, or death of a family member.

How Many People Got Sick In Texas?

Lyons ReadyCare and Sysco Imperial supplement shakes were linked to 6 illnesses and 1 death in Texas, according to the CDC Map of Where People Got Sick.

This is a long-running outbreak, with illnesses reported from August 2018 to March 2025. The true number of sick people is likely higher.

According to health officials: “This outbreak may not have been limited to the states with known illnesses, and the true number of sick people was likely higher than the number reported.”

Where Were They Sold?

The supplement shakes that were contaminated with Listeria were manufactured by Prairie Farms Dairy Inc. at a facility in Fort Wayne, Indiana, and distributed nationwide to institutions, such as:

  • Hospitals
  • Nursing homes
  • Long-term care facilities
  • Retirement homes
  • Other healthcare facilities

What Are Supplement Shakes?

Lyons ReadyCare and Sysco Imperial Supplement Shakes were sold frozen in 4-oz. milk cartons, in flavors like strawberry, vanilla, or chocolate. When needed, the frozen shakes would be defrosted to a soft liquid “milkshake” consistency, before being given to patients.

The shakes were given most commonly to older adults on soft-food diets, or people with trouble swallowing due to other health issues.

The supplement shakes are also used to give patients extra nutrition or prevent weight-loss. They were advertised as “supplemental nutrition shakes,” because they were designed to be high in calories, fiber, protein, and nutrients, in a relatively small amount of food.

Why Was This Outbreak So Severe?

This outbreak of Listeria was particularly severe, with nearly all of the reported cases resulting in hospitalization or death. This is because many of the people who who were given Lyons ReadyCare and Sysco Imperial Supplement Shakes had multiple risk-factors for a severe Listeria infection. They were older than 65 years old, hospitalized, or had a vulnerable immune system due to health issues.

What is Listeria?

Listeria monocytogenes is a bacteria that can survive in frozen and refrigerated foods. It can also create a protective biofilm, which helps the bacteria survive when it is exposed to common sanitizers.

In recent years, there have been multiple deadly outbreaks of Listeria in dairy products like ice cream and milkshakes. This is because Listeria is a very hardy germ that can be tough to eliminate from food-manufacturing equipment.

The CDC also explained why this outbreak has lasted 7 years:

“While cases date back to 2018, over half of the people affected by this outbreak got sick in either 2024 or 2025. It is common for Listeria outbreaks to last several years because it is an incredibly hardy germ that can survive on surfaces for long periods of time.”

Signs & Symptoms of Listeria Infection

The symptoms of a Listeria infection usually begin within 2 weeks of eating food that is contaminated, but it can sometimes take up to 10 weeks for the symptoms to appear, according to the FDA.

Listeria infections are dangerous because they can spread beyond the intestines to the bloodstream, brain, spinal cord, or other parts of the body. Some of the most common symptoms of Listeria are also symptoms of these life-threatening complications, such as meningitis and sepsis (blood infections).

The symptoms of Listeria may include:

  • Fever
  • Muscle aches
  • Tiredness
  • Headache
  • Stiff neck
  • Confusion
  • Loss of balance
  • Seizures
