Shakes Sold to Nursing Homes Linked to Deadly Listeria Outbreak
In February 2025, the CDC linked Sysco Imperial and Lyons ReadyCare Shakes to 38 infections with Listeria, including 37 people who were hospitalized and 12 people who died. Most of the victims were people in nursing homes or long-term care facilities.

What is Sysco?
Sysco Corporation, a company based in Houston, Texas, is the largest food distributor in the world. Sysco is mostly known for supplying food to restaurants, but it also sells and distributes food to hospitals, nursing homes, long-term care facilities, and healthcare facilities.
Sysco Halts Purchases of Shakes From Facility Linked to Listeria Outbreak
Houston, February 21, 2025 — Sysco will halt all purchases of frozen shakes and all other products from the Fort Wayne, Indiana, facility that was linked to a Listeria outbreak.
According to the Sysco Recall announcement:
Sysco is immediately removing all the recalled items from its inventory, notifying potentially implicated downstream customers of the recall, and halting production of all products that originate from that facility.
Lyons ReadyCare and Sysco Imperial Shake Recall
In February 2025, a deadly outbreak of Listeria monocytogenes infections was linked to Sysco Imperial Frozen Supplemental Shakes and Lyons ReadyCare Frozen Shakes that were sold since 2018.
Sysco distributed the shakes to food-service customers like hospitals and nursing homes. They were not sold in stores.
Who Made The Shakes?
Sysco Imperial shakes were supplied by Lyons Magnus LLC. The shakes were manufactured by Prairie Farms Dairy Inc. at a facility in Fort Wayne, Indiana. When the FDA inspected this facility, swabs in the processing area tested positive for Listeria monocytogenes. The strain of Listeria matched the one that made people sick.
Sysco Imperial Shake Recall
On February 22, 2025, Lyons Magnus LLC announced a recall for Sysco Imperial® and Lyons ReadyCare® Frozen Shakes.
These shakes were sold frozen, but then defrosted until they were a thick liquid consistency like a milkshake. They were given to people in hospitals, nursing homes, and long-term care facilities.
The shakes came in flavors like Strawberry, Chocolate, and Vanilla. The shakes were high in calories, protein, and fiber. They were given to patients who needed “soft diets” due to difficulty swallowing, patients who needed extra calories to prevent unintended weight-loss, and fiber to support digestive health.
Why Was This Outbreak So Severe?
The outbreak was particularly severe, likely because many of the people who drink these shakes were at high risk of complications due to underlying health issues, hospitalization, and older age.
The high case-count is also because this outbreak continued for 7 years. Over half of the illnesses were reported in 2024 and 2025, but the first illnesses reported in 2018. According to the CDC Safety Warning:
“While cases date back to 2018, over half of the people affected by this outbreak got sick in either 2024 or 2025. It is common for Listeria outbreaks to last several years because it is an incredibly hardy germ that can survive on surfaces for long periods of time.”
Frozen Shake Listeria Outbreak Started in 2018
Health officials investigated clusters of illnesses in 2018, 2021, and 2023, in which all of the sick people were infected with the same strain of Listeria. Investigators knew that a specific food was responsible, but it took years to conclusively pinpoint Lyons ReadyCare and Sysco Imperial Frozen Shakes as the culprit.
