Jentadueto stimulates the pancreas to make more insulin, which lowers blood-sugar levels. Unfortunately, some studies suggest it could also lead to a skin disorder called bullous pemphigoid, pancreatitis, or pancreatic cancer.

Jentadueto Pancreatic Cancer

Having type-2 diabetes is a risk-factor for pancreatic cancer. Chronic pancreatitis is another risk-factor, because long-term inflammation increases cell turnover and the risk of cancerous DNA mutations.

Jentadueto contains linagliptin, which is an incretin mimetic drug that forces the pancreas to make more insulin. This helps lower blood-sugar levels, but over-stimulation might also increase the risk of inflammation.

Other incretin mimetic drugs, such as Byetta (exenatide) and Januvia (sitagliptin), have been linked to dozens of cases of pancreatitis, according to the FDA. The agency has also warned about studies linking incretin therapy with pre-cancerous growths that could lead to pancreatic cancer.

The first studies linking incretin therapy and pancreatic cancer were published in 2010. In early 2013, researchers who autopsied pancreases from patients on incretin therapy found pre-cancerous growths called pancreatic duct metaplasia. At the very least, researchers warned, these patients might have an increased risk of pancreatic surgery.

Overview

Pancreatic cancer starts in the pancreas, which is a gland located behind the stomach. Most tumors start in exocrine glands, which make digestive enzymes. The pancreas also makes hormones that regulate blood-sugar levels.

Pancreatic Cancer Signs & Symptoms

Pancreatic cancer does not cause any signs or symptoms until it has grown large enough to press on nearby organs or nerves. The most common symptoms include weight-loss, backache, or stomach pain.

In some cases, pancreatic cancer grows around the bile duct and cuts off the flow of bile, which causes jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes). Other types of pancreatic cancer release substances that cause blood clots in the legs, also known as deep vein thrombosis or DVT.

Warning signs and symptoms of pancreatic cancer:

  • Pain
  • Loss of appetite
  • Jaundice
  • Fever
  • Extreme tiredness (fatigue)
  • Weight-loss (unexplained loss of 10 pounds or more)
  • Indigestion after eating greasy foods
  • Pale-colored stools, dark-colored urine

What is the problem?

By the time pancreatic cancer causes symptoms, it has usually metastasized — grown and spread to other organs outside the pancreas. This is why surgery is only an option for about 20% of people with pancreatic cancer. It is also why pancreatic cancer is one of the deadliest types of cancer.
