UPDATE: Navitas Organics Recalls Chia Seeds Sold at Whole Foods
In January 2026, Navitas Organics announced a recall certain 8-oz. stand-up pouches of Organic Chia Seeds that may be contaminated with Salmonella. No illnesses were reported. The chia seeds were sold nationwide at stores like Whole Foods Market, Amazon, and other retailers.
Walmart Chia Seeds Recalled for Salmonella Risk
In July 2024, Natural Sourcing International recalled Walmart Great Value Organic Black Chia Seeds due to a risk of Salmonella contamination that could result in a severe food poisoning illness.
No illnesses were reported at the time of the recall, but the chia seeds may be contaminated. The manufacturer, Natural Sourcing International, is urging customers to throw away the product.
The recall involved 32-ounce pouches of Organic Great Value Black Chia Seeds that were sent to Walmart stores nationwide. The product information is printed on the bottom of the back panel of the pouch.
The recalled products can be identified by Lot Code beginning with “24095” and ending in “C018,” an expiration date of “BB: OCT 30 2026” and “Product of Uganda.”
What is the Risk?
Chia seeds are a health food and they are commonly eaten raw, which poses a high risk of food poisoning because there is no cooking process that would destroy harmful bacteria like Salmonella.
Salmonella infections are not usually life-threatening and most healthy adults recover without needing medical treatment. There is a higher risk of fatal infections for young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems.
Symptoms & Complications of Salmonella Food Poisoning
The symptoms of a Salmonella infection commonly include a fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.
In rare cases, people who are infected with Salmonella develop life-threatening complications like dehydration due to severe nausea and vomiting, bloodstream infections, arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis, arthritis, and more.
Why is Salmonella a Problem?
Salmonella is a type of bacteria that can survive for weeks, months, or even years in dry foods. This is why food poisoning is a problem for dry foods with long shelf-lives, such a chia seeds, spices, herbs, nuts, chocolate, and other low-moisture powdered products.
Dry spices are a significant source of Salmonella, with one study in 2013 finding that roughly 7% of imported spices tested by the FDA were contaminated with Salmonella.
Signs & Symptoms of Salmonella
People who eat food that is contaminated with Salmonella may experience symptoms including:
- Fever
- Diarrhea (may be bloody)
- Abdominal pain or stomach cramps
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Dehydration
- Possibly severe illness or complications, especially for high-risk people
