NuWave Hit With New Pressure Cooker Burn Lawsuit
The lawsuit was filed by a woman from Indiana who was burned on September 7, 2025 while using her NuWave Nutri-Pot Digital Pressure Cooker.
According to the complaint, the lid was able to be rotated and opened while the unit was still under pressure, allowing scalding-hot contents to be forcefully ejected onto her body.
The complaint blames the incident on the failure of the pressure cooker’s “Sure-Lock® Safety System,” which is supposed to keep the lid locked until the pressure is safely released. It also accuses NuWave of failing to redesign the pressure cooker despite the existence of safer alternative designs.
The lawsuit includes claims for strict liability, negligence, and breach of express and implied warranties. It seeks compensatory and punitive damages.
What Is the Defect in the NuWave Nutri-Pot?
Lawsuits allege that the Nutri-Pot is unreasonably dangerous because the lid can be rotated and opened while the unit remains pressurized, despite the appearance that pressure has been released. When that happens, the trapped pressure can violently eject scalding-hot food, liquid, and steam onto anyone nearby.
According to the complaint, the plaintiff was burned as a direct result of a design flaw in the lid’s safety mechanisms. Her lawsuit claims that the lid can be:
“…rotated and opened while the pressure cooker was still under pressure, during the normal, directed use of the pressure cooker, allowing its scalding hot contents to be forcefully ejected from the pressure cooker and onto Plaintiff.”
The lawsuit claims NuWave advertises that “safety is a core value” and that its pressure cookers have “multiple independent safety features.” It alleges those representations are “not just misleading, they are false, and put consumers like Plaintiff directly in harm’s way.”
What Injuries Were Reported?
The plaintiff suffered severe 2nd- and 3rd-degree burns to her torso and breast, according to the complaint. Her injuries required extensive medical treatment, including hospitalization and surgical intervention.
She also underwent a skin graft procedure, according to the lawsuit. The lawsuit does not describe her long-term injuries, but burns from pressurized steam and scalding liquid can potentially result in permanent scarring and long-term physical and emotional consequences.
Previous Lawsuits Against NuWave
This is not the first lawsuit involving a NuWave pressure cooker. In October 2024, a Nutri-Pot lawsuit was filed in the same court by a woman from Kansas who was burned when she opened the lid of a pressurized unit.
That lawsuit claimed there were at least 26 prior incidents involving NuWave pressure cookers, with some occurring as early as December 2016. Despite these incidents, the Nutri-Pot has never been recalled.
