A woman from Denver, Colorado who suffered 3rd-degree burns to her face when her Crock-Pot Pressure Cooker exploded has filed a lawsuit against Sunbeam Products.
Crock-Pot Pressure Cooker Recalled After 99 Burn Injuries Reported
In November 2020, Sunbeam Products recalled 940,000 Crock-Pot Express Pressure Cookers because the lid can detach during use and cause an explosion of boiling-hot food and liquid. At least 99 people suffered burn injuries ranging from 1st-degree to 3rd-degree. There were 119 reports of the lid detaching during use.
According to the recall notice:
The recalled Crock-Pot multi-cooker can pressurize when the lid is not fully locked. This can cause the lid to suddenly detach while the product is in use, posing burn risks to consumers from hot food and liquids ejected from the product.”
This recall involves the Crock-Pot® 6-Quart Express Crock Multi-Cooker (Model Number SCCPPC600-V1). They were sold between July 2017 and November 2020 at stores like Walmart, Target, Amazon, and more.
Crock-Pot Pressure Cooker Class Action Lawsuit
In January 2020, a class action lawsuit (PDF) was filed by a woman who was severely burned by an exploding Crock-Pot Express Pressure Cooker.
The lawsuit was filed against the manufacturers, Sunbeam Products and Newell Brands. The companies are accused of knowingly selling a defective product with unreasonably dangerous design flaws.
The class action lawsuit was filed on January 7, 2020 in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida — In RE: Kimberly R. v. Sunbeam Products Inc. d/b/a Jarden Consumer Solutions.
Who Filed the Lawsuit?
The class action lawsuit was filed by Kimberly R., a woman who was using the Crock-Pot Express Electric Pressure Cooker to make soup in January 2018. After releasing the pressure from valve and pushing the “shop” button, she opened the lid.
Unfortunately, the pot was still dangerously pressurized. As soon as she opened the lid, hot food exploded out of the pot and caused 1st-degree and 2nd-degree burn injuries all over her hands, wrist, and stomach, as well as scarring.
Another Lawsuit Filed for Crock-Pot Pressure Cooker Explosion
A few weeks after the first Crock-Pot Pressure Cooker lawsuit was filed, another lawsuit was filed by a woman who was severely burned.
The lawsuit claims that the pressure cooker is defective because its “safety features” do not actually prevent a user from opening the lid when the pot contains a dangerous amount of pressure.
If the lid is opened when the pressure cooker is still pressurized, it can result in an explosion of boiling liquid, steam, and sticky food. Anyone standing nearby is at risk of suffering devastating burn injuries.

What is the Problem?
These lawsuits claim there are two major design defects with the Crock-Pot Express, including:
- Defective pressure-relief valve that inaccurately indicates when all of the pressure is released and it is safe to open the lid
- Defective lid gasket that allows a user to twist open the lid when there is still a dangerous amount of pressure in the pot
