In June 2026, a burn injury lawsuit was filed against Sunbeam Products and Newell Brands by a woman from Maryland who suffered serious burn injuries while using a Crock-Pot Express Crock Multi-cooker that was allegedly defective.

The lawsuit involves the Crock-Pot 6-Quart Express Crock Multi-Cooker, a pressure cooker that was recalled in November 2020 after 99 burn injuries were reported, including 3rd degree burns. The recall warning explains:

“The recalled Crock-Pot multi-cooker can pressurize when the lid is not fully locked. This can cause the lid to suddenly detach while the product is in use, posing burn risks to consumers from hot food and liquids ejected from the product.”

According to the complaint, her burn injuries occurred on July 20, 2024, during the normal use of the pressure cooker. She was able to easily remove the lid while the unit was still pressurized. This allowed the built-up pressure to suddenly escape, which spewed hot food and liquid onto her body.

Lawyers allege the lid can be opened while the unit is still under pressure, ejecting scalding contents onto anyone standing nearby.

The complaint also brings 5 counts against Sunbeam Products and Newell Brands:

  • Strict products liability — the pressure cooker was defective and unreasonably dangerous for ordinary use
  • Negligence — failure to use reasonable care in the design, manufacture, warnings, and sale of the product
  • Breach of implied warranty of fitness for a particular purpose — the cooker was not fit to cook safely
  • Breach of implied warranty of merchantability — the cooker was not fit for its ordinary purpose
  • Punitive damages — alleging the companies concealed the defect despite knowing the lid could detach under pressure

Her pressure cooker lawsuit was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Georgia, Gainesville Division (Case No. 2:26-cv-00201-RWS) on June 16, 2026.
