April 15, 2019 — Target, Trader Joe’s, Kroger, Walmart, Amazon/Whole Foods and other stores have recalled pre-cut melon bowls after an outbreak of Salmonella sickened at least 93 people.
The products are clear plastic bowls containing pre-cut cantaloupe, honeydew, or watermelon, mixed melons or other pre-cut fruit. The outbreak strain is Salmonella Carrau, according to the FDA outbreak investigation.
The recall was announced by Caito Foods, LLC, of Indianapolis, Indiana. The same company was linked to another outbreak in 2018 involving Salmonella Adelaide in pre-cut melon products.
The following products are included in the recall:
- Kroger under the Renaissance Food Group label
- Kroger under Boar’s Head Private Label
- Target under the Garden Highway Label
- Trader Joes under the Trader Joes label
- Walmart under a Freshness Guaranteed label
- Amazon/Whole Foods under the Whole Foods Market Label
The products were distributed in Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, West Virginia, and Wisconsin.
The CDC has reported a total of 93 people in 9 states were infected with Salmonella Carrau after eating pre-cut melon bowls since March 4, 2019. Twenty-three people were hospitalized. No deaths were reported.
Salmonella is a bacteria that can cause food poisoning. Most people develop fever, diarrhea, and abdominal cramps for 4-7 days. Most healthy adults recover without needing medical treatment, but infections can cause serious complications, including death.
