Over 700 Roundup Lawsuits Filed as Experts Question Safety

March 30, 2017 — Monsanto is now facing over 700 lawsuits from people with cancer who were exposed to Roundup. The most recent cases have pulled a St. Louis-based ad agency into the fray.

Lawyers just filed 136 more Roundup lawsuits against Monsanto and Osborn & Barr, an ad agency that escaped scrutiny up until now.

Osborn & Barr was responsible for marketing Roundup as “safer than table salt” and “practically nontoxic” for decades. The ads were banned in New York in the 1990s for making misleading claims.

The vast majority of the lawsuits were filed in St. Louis by a Missouri-based law firm that is representing people all over the United States. Monsanto is also facing at least 55 federal lawsuits in a centralized litigation in California — Roundup MDL No. 2741.

Lawsuits accuse Monsanto of downplaying the risk of cancer. Studies of farm-workers in the United States, Canada, and Sweden who used glyphosate have shown higher rates of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. The studies prompted the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) to re-classify glyphosate as a “probable human carcinogen.”

Monsanto disputes any link between glyphosate and lymphoma, but a growing number of researchers are demanding new safety studies. The British Medical Journal published an editorial in which researchers warned:

Current safety standards for [glyphosate based herbicides] are outdated and may fail to protect public health or the environment.”

The use of Roundup has increased 100-fold over the last 40 years. Scientific technology has advanced significantly during that time. Over 1,500 studies of glyphosate were published in the last 10 years alone.

Even so, researchers warned that 73% of the studies the EPA used to assess the cancer risks of Roundup were published before 1985, and only 11 out of approximately 300 of those studies were peer-reviewed.
