Walmart Sued in Arkansas Over Pressure Cooker Burn Injury

In June 2026, yet another pressure cooker lawsuit was filed against Walmart Inc. over a Farberware 7-in-1 programmable pressure cooker that was sold exclusively by the retailer. The lawsuit was filed by a woman from West Virginia who accuses Walmart of selling a product that was defective and “unreasonably dangerous” because the lid opened when the unit was pressurized, spewing scalding-hot food and steam onto her body.

Her pressure cooker lawsuit against Walmart was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Arkansas — Case No. 5:26-cv-05131-TLB.

How Was She Burned?

Her lawsuit explains that on July 4, 2024, she was using the pressure cooker under normal circumstances, when the lid blew off the pot. The sudden release of built-up pressure also ejected the scalding-hot contents, steam, and food onto her body. She required medical treatment for partial-thickness burns, including several medical procedures like wound debridement. Even so, she still has permanent scarring.

What Is the Defect?

The lawsuit alleges that the Farberware 7-in-1 Pressure Cooker contains a design defect the the lid and other safety mechanisms. These “safety mechanisms” may fail to lock the lid when the unit is under pressure, according to the complaint. This failure can allow the lid to open unexpectedly, even when it appears that all of the pressure has been released and the product is safe to open.

The lawsuit cites advertising statements in the Owner’s Manual. Walmart also marketed the pressure cooker to consumers with features to lock the lid. For example, the owner’s manual describes safeguards that were supposed to keep the lid from unlocking until the float valve drops on its own.

According to the complaint, those safety mechanisms failed to perform as advertised. The filing alleges the pressure cooker was “unreasonably dangerous” … because the lid “can be rotated and opened while the unit remains pressurized.” If the lid opens, the sudden release of trapped steam can potentially eject the boiling-hot contents of the pot onto the user (or innocent bystanders).

Walmart’s headquarters are located in Bentonville, Arkansas, and that is where its principal place of business is located.
