Utz Recalls Zapp’s & Dirty Potato Chips for Salmonella Risk
On May 4, 2026, Utz Quality Foods, LLC, a subsidiary of Utz Brands, Inc., voluntarily issued a recall of certain limited varieties of Zapp’s and Dirty brand potato chips due to potential Salmonella contamination.
According to the FDA notice, Utz was notified that a seasoning containing dry milk powder, sourced from California Dairies, Inc. and supplied by a third-party supplier, may contain Salmonella. The affected seasoning batches tested negative prior to use, but Utz initiated the recall out of an abundance of caution based on the ingredient supplier’s recall.
To date, no illnesses have been reported to Utz in connection with the recalled chips. The recall is being conducted with the knowledge of the FDA.
What Is the Salmonella Risk?
Salmonella is an organism that, according to the FDA, can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Symptoms of Salmonella infection often include:
- Fever
- Diarrhea (which may be bloody)
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Abdominal pain
In rare cases, Salmonella can enter the bloodstream and produce more severe illnesses, including arterial infections (such as infected aneurysms), endocarditis, and arthritis. Young children, the elderly, pregnant women, and people with weakened immune systems are at the highest risk.
Which Products Are Affected?
Health officials are warning consumers about the risk of Salmonella in the following recalled products:
- 1.5 oz Zapp’s Bayou Blackened Ranch Potato Chips (UPC 83791272917)
- 2.5 oz Zapp’s Bayou Blackened Ranch Potato Chips (UPC 83791272924)
- 8 oz Zapp’s Bayou Blackened Ranch Potato Chips (UPC 83791272931)
- 2 oz Dirty Salt and Vinegar Potato Chips (UPC 83791520148)
- 1.5 oz Zapp’s Salt and Vinegar Potato Chips, 60-count (UPC 83791010144)
- 2 oz Dirty Maui Onion Potato Chips (UPC 83791520162)
- 2.5 oz Zapp’s Big Cheezy Potato Chips (UPC 83791192208)
- 8 oz Zapp’s Big Cheezy Potato Chips (UPC 83791192246)
- 2 oz Dirty Sour Cream and Onion Potato Chips (UPC 83791520094)
The affected packages carry “Best By” dates ranging from July 27, 2026 through August 31, 2026. The complete list of batch codes is available on the official FDA recall page.
Where Were They Sold?
The recalled Zapp’s and Dirty brand potato chips were distributed at retail stores nationwide, including grocery stores, convenience stores, and other retailers across Texas. Zapp’s chips have a strong following among Texas consumers due to their Louisiana-style kettle-cooked flavors, and they are widely available.
If you have any of the recalled products at home, the company advises consumers not to eat them and to discard the chips. For updates and the full batch code list, visit the official FDA recall notice.
How Many People Were Affected?
To date, Utz has not received any reports of illness in connection with the recalled chips. However, official counts in food poisoning incidents typically underrepresent the actual number of victims, since many people do not seek medical care or are not tested for Salmonella.
