Texas Woman Files Pressure Cooker Lawsuit Against Best Buy

April 19, 2023 — A woman from Dallas, Texas has filed a pressure cooker lawsuit against Best Buy.

The lawsuit was filed by plaintiff Shvon C., a woman who claims that she was severely burned on May 4, 2021, as a result of opening the lid on her pressure cooker while it was still under pressure.

The incident involved an Insignia 6-Quart Multi-Function Pressure Cooker (Model Number NS-MC60SS9), which was manufactured and sold by Best Buy.

According to her lawsuit, the pressure cooker was advertised to have safety features including a locking lid. The Owners Manual specifically claims it has a “Locking lid: Keeps the lid locked firmly in place once enough pressure builds inside the cooker.”

Instead, she alleges that Best Buy Insignia Pressure Cookers are defective and “unreasonably dangerous” for their intended use because consumers can easily twist open the lid before it is safe.

This may result in hot food, liquid, and steam being ejected out of the pressure cooker and onto anyone nearby. She claims to have suffered “severe and substantial burn injuries” when she opened the lid.

Her lawsuit was filed in Minnesota, where Best Buy is headquartered. The company is accused of negligence for selling a defective product.

Her lawsuit was filed on April 17, 2023 in the U.S. District Court for the District of Minnesota — Case Number 0:23-cv-01046.
