UPDATE: Wayfair Murphy Beds Recalled After 11 People Injured
In December 2023, about 12,000 portable Murphy beds were recalled after at least 11 people suffered injuries to their shoulders, back, legs, knees or feet when the cabinet on the front of the bed broke off and fell.
The recall involves “Windsor Queen Xtrabed Mobile Murphy Beds” that were sold exclusively on Wayfair.com from November 2016 through April 2023.
Bestar Wall Bed Recall
In April 2022, the Canadian furniture company Bestar issued a recall for about 182,000 wall beds that were sold in the U.S. and Canada since 2014 due to a risk of severe injuries or death.
What is the Problem?
The recalled beds can detach from the wall and fall on people nearby, which poses a risk of severe crush injuries, entrapment, or death. Bestar warned that the beds can tip over unexpectedly if they are not assembled and installed correctly by a professional installer.
How Many People Have Been Injured?
In the U.S. and Canada, at least 69 people have been injured or killed by Bester wall beds, including 1 person who died. In July 2018, a 79-year-old woman died when a Bestar bed fell on top of her, injuring her spine.
In the U.S., there were 60 reports of people who suffered bruising and other injuries when a Bestar wall bed fell on them. In Canada, there were 15 reports of the wall beds detaching from the wall, and 8 reports of people who suffered injuries as of March 28, 2022, according to the Canadian recall notice.
