Viekira Liver Injury Lawsuits

Viekira Pak cures over 90% of people with hepatitis C, but it can also cause liver failure, cirrhosis, transplant, or death within 1-4 weeks of treatment. This is why it is not recommended for most people with severe liver problems. Dozens of people have been seriously injured, and many of them died. Our lawyers are helping victims file lawsuits.

AbbVie Strengthens Liver Warnings

The updated label emphasizes that Viekira is “not recommended” for patients with moderate-to-severe liver impairment due to the risk of toxicity. It also asks doctors to check patients for signs of decompensated cirrhosis before prescribing Viekira.

FDA: Viekira Can Cause Serious Liver Injury

In October 2015, the FDA reported 26 serious liver injuries during the first 11 months that Viekira and Technivie were approved. Ten patients developed liver failure resulting in a transplant or death. Another 16 patients experienced various degrees of liver dysfunction.

Who is at Risk?

The most serious liver injuries occurred in patients who never should have been prescribed Viekira or Technivie because they already had advanced underlying cirrhosis. Most cases occurred within 1 to 4 weeks of starting treatment.

Who Should Not Take Viekira?

The FDA warns doctors not to prescribe Viekira to patients with moderate to severe hepatic impairment (Child-Pugh Class B & C). That includes a lot of people with chronic hepatitis C infections.

What Should Doctors & Patients Do?

Viekira can worsen liver problems. Patients should seek medical attention immediately if they develop symptoms like fatigue, weakness, loss of appetite, nausea and vomiting, yellow eyes or skin, or light-colored stools. Doctors should monitor patients for complications like jaundice, internal bleeding, ascites (swelling due to fluid), and encephalopathy.

Viekira Class Action Lawsuits

There are no class actions for people with liver injuries from Viekira, but several class actions have been filed against insurance companies who refused to pay for Viekira unless the patient was sick enough to qualify for a cure.

Viekira Lawsuit Settlement Amounts

In 2016, United HealthCare paid $300 million in a class action settlement for restricting coverage for Viekira and other hepatitis C cures. This class action ended in January 2017, but people who developed liver injuries may still be able to file lawsuits.

What is the problem?

The Clark Firm, LLP is nationally recognized as a class action law firm in Texas, but we are not filing a Viekira class action against AbbVie Inc. Instead, we are filing individual lawsuits for liver injuries, such as:

  • Cirrhosis
  • Jaundice (yellowing of skin and eyes)
  • Encephalopathy
  • Internal bleeding
  • Hepatic decompensation
  • Liver toxicity
  • Inflammation (acute non-viral hepatitis)
  • Liver failure
  • Liver transplant
  • Death

About Class Actions

Class actions are an efficient way to resolve a lot of similar legal claims all at once, but they are not designed to maximize compensation for individuals with the most serious injuries. Instead, members share any payout awarded through a settlement or jury.

Why Our Law Firm is Filing Individual Lawsuits as Opposed to a Class Action

Members of class actions may have to accept “low-ball” settlements or excessive attorneys’ fees. Our lawyers file individual lawsuits so we can focus on helping people with serious liver injuries from Viekira.

We specialize in seeking compensation for medical expenses, pain and suffering, lost income, permanent injuries (cirrhosis, scarring, etc.), disability, wrongful death, and more.
