Texas Lawyer for Technivie Liver InjuryTechnivie can cure 90% of people with hepatitis C, but it is not for people with cirrhosis or advanced liver problems because it can cause liver failure or death. There is no excuse for downplaying these risks.

What is Technivie?

Technivie is a treatment for hepatitis C virus genotype-4 (HCV-4) infections. It is manufactured by AbbVie Inc. and it was approved by the FDA in July 2015.

Should I Take Technivie?

Technivie is not for patients with cirrhosis, which causes scarring (fibrosis) and poor liver function. Technivie is also not recommended for patients with moderate or severe liver impairment (Child-Pugh Class B & C) due to the risk of liver toxicity.

What is the problem?

Cirrhosis and liver impairment are common complications of hepatitis C, but most patients with these complications should not take Technivie. Instead of being cured, patients could develop even more serious complications, such as:

  • Cirrhosis
  • Poor liver function
  • Inflammation
  • Acute hepatitis
  • Hepatic decompensation
  • Hepatotoxicity
  • Liver failure
  • Liver transplant
  • Death

FDA Warning: Technivie & Liver Failure

In October 2015, the FDA issued a Safety Warning that Technivie can cause serious liver injury, hepatic failure, transplant, or death — especially in patients with cirrhosis or pre-existing advanced hepatitis. Most of these liver injuries occurred in the first 1-4 weeks of treatment.

Signs & Symptoms of Technivie Injuries

In clinical trials, the most common side effects of Technivie were fatigue, itching, weakness, lack of energy, nausea, and trouble sleeping. These side effects are also common symptoms of liver damage. According to the FDA:

Patients taking [Technivie] should contact their health care professional immediately if they develop fatigue, weakness, loss of appetite, nausea and vomiting, yellow eyes or skin, or light-colored stools, as these may be signs of liver injury.”

Complications of Liver Injury

Technivie can worsen underlying liver problems, so the FDA asks doctors to monitor for complications like confusion (hepatic encephalopathy), internal bleeding (variceal hemorrhage), belly swelling due to fluid (ascites), or liver enzymes (direct bilirubin, ALT).

Can Technivie Cure Hepatitis?

Technivie contains a combination of ribavirin with three new medications (ombitasvir, paritaprevir and ritonavir) that work together to cure over 90% of people with hepatitis C genotype-4.

How Does Technivie Work?

Technivie is a direct-acting antiviral (DAA), but it does not kill hepatitis C viruses. Instead, it interferes with a specific step in the life-cycle of the virus, which stops the virus from replicating and causing infections.

Technivie vs. Viekira Pak

Technivie is very similar to Viekira Pak, which is another hepatitis C treatment sold by AbbVie. Unlike Technivie, Viekira is approved for people with cirrhosis, but only genotype-1 infections. Both contain ombitasvir, paritaprevir and ritonavir.
