Uloric Lawsuits

Lawsuits are now being filed by people who accuse Takeda Pharmaceuticals of failing to warn about the deadly side effects of Uloric (febuxostat), a blockbuster treatment for gout.

Uloric is an expensive gout medication that was introduced by Takeda Pharmaceuticals in 2009, after the FDA twice rejected approval in 2005 and 2006 due to concerns about heart-related side effects.

Despite the potential risk, Takeda advertised Uloric as better than cheaper generic gout drugs like allopurinol. Instead, Uloric has been linked to significantly higher rates of heart attacks, strokes, and death.

Uloric Gets ‘Black Box’ Warning for Heart Attacks, Stroke & Death Risks

In February 2019, the FDA issued a Drug Safety Communication after a safety study linked Uloric to a higher risk of heart attack, stroke, and death compared to another type of gout drug called allopurinol.

The agency also ordered drug-makers to add a ‘Black Box’ warning label about heart-related deaths. This is the strongest type of warning the FDA can require on a medication lablel.

Furthermore, the FDA warned that Uloric should only be prescribed when allopurinol does not effectively treat gout, or patients who experience severe side effects with allopurinol.

What is the Risk?

In November 2019, health officials in Canada issued a Safety Warning after 4.3% of patients on Uloric died of a heart attack or stroke during a major study called the CARES clinical trial.

What Should I Do?

Patients should tell their doctor about any history of heart problems, such as heart attack or stroke. Seek emergency medical attention for any of the following symptoms:

  • Chest pain
  • Shortness of breath
  • Rapid or irregular heartbeat
  • Numbness or weakness on one side of your body
  • Dizziness
  • Trouble talking
  • Sudden severe headache

Uloric and Renal Failure

Uloric is removed from the body through the kidneys, but it has not been studied in patients with end-stage renal impairment. Due to the unknown risk of renal failure, patients with severe kidney problems should limit their dose of Uloric to 40-mg per day. Unfortunately, patients on gout are more likely to develop renal failure because uric acid crystals in the blood damages and scars the kidneys.

Whistleblower Files Uloric Class Action Lawsuit

Takeda Pharmaceuticals, the manufacturer of Uloric, was hit with a whistleblower lawsuits in 2010. The whistleblower, Dr. Helen Ge, accused the company of withholding information about side effects of Uloric. Takeda is currently facing thousands of lawsuits involving similar allegations surrounding Actos, a type-2 diabetes drug.

Can I Join a Class Action?

The Clark Firm, LLP is nationally recognized as a class action law firm, but we are not filing a Uloric class action lawsuit at this time. Instead, we are filing individual lawsuits for people who developed severe side effects, such as:

  • Heart attack
  • Stroke
  • Renal failure (or “kidney failure”)
  • Kidney disease
  • Acute Kidney Injury (AKI)

About Class Actions

Class actions are useful when a lot of people have similar legal claims. One lawsuit is filed for everyone who is seeking compensation. If compensation is awarded, everyone who joins the class action shares the payout.

Why Our Law Firm is Filing Individual Lawsuits as Opposed to a Class Action

Class actions can have major disadvantages for individuals who have suffered far more serious injuries than the average person. Instead of a class action, our lawyers are filing individual lawsuits for people who were injured by Uloric.

We hold pharmaceutical companies accountable for selling dangerous medications. If you were injured, we may be able to help you seek compensation for your pain and suffering, medical expenses, lost income, and more.
