April 2019 — After an outbreak of Salmonella illnesses, the FDA is warning about a risk of food poisoning from eating frozen raw ground tuna sold by Jensen Tuna.

As of April 16, 2019, a total of 13 people in 7 states were infected with the outbreak strain of Salmonella Newport, including 2 people who were hospitalized, according to an update from the the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

CDC Warning on “Spicy Tuna” Sushi
The CDC is specifically warning about the risk of Salmonella in sushi and spicy tuna rolls made with ground tuna from Jensen Tuna:
“Consumers who order sushi made with raw tuna, including “spicy tuna,” should ask the restaurant or grocery store if the tuna is from Jensen Tuna. If you are not sure if the tuna has been recalled, do not eat it.”
What Tuna Was Recalled?
On April 15, 2019, Jensen Tuna, of Houma, Louisiana, recalled frozen ground raw tuna that was imported by JK Fish. It was sold from November 2018 to March 2019.
The recalled tuna was individually packaged in 1-pound bags and sold in 20-pound boxes with Lot Numbers z266, z271, and z272.
Where Was the Tuna Sold?
The tuna was sold to wholesalers in Connecticut, Iowa, Illinois, Minnesota, New York, North Dakota, and Washington, but it may have also been sold in other states if it was redistributed by wholesalers.
