In November 2013, a jury in Pennsylvania ordered Janssen Pharmaceuticals to pay an eye-opening $11 million in compensation and punitive damages to the family of Brayden Gurley, a baby who was born with severe cleft palate and other defects after his mother took Topamax during pregnancy. Although Janssen appealed the verdict as excessive, a judge ruled in May 2014 that it will stand and Janssen will not receive a new trial.
