Topamax Overview

Topamax was introduced into the U.S. market as an anticonvulsant drug. However, it is intended to prevent the symptoms of both seizures and chronic migraines before they happen. Unfortunately, studies have recently linked Topamax to the development of severe, life-threatening congenital birth defects in children whose mothers used the medication while pregnant.

On March 4, 2011, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a warning regarding the increased risk of congenital birth defects in babies who were born to women taking Topamax. As a result, The FDA has required that Topamax be placed in Pregnancy Category D because of the conclusive evidence linking the drug to birth defects in children.

Side Effects of Topamax

Topamax side effects include the following:

  • Birth defects
  • Cleft palate and cleft lip
  • Dizziness
  • Fatigue
  • Upper respiratory infection
  • Nausea
  • Cranial defects

Topamax Class Action Lawsuit Information

Janssen Pharmaceuticals has been hit with over 100 lawsuits involving children who were born with birth defects after their mother took Topamax during pregnancy. Several have been awarded multi-million dollar jury awards. These cases are not part of a Topamax class action lawsuit — instead, they are individual lawsuits filed by families who hired an attorney to fight for compensation on behalf of their child.
