Strauss Israel Recalls Kosher Chocolate & Candy for Salmonella Risk

On April 28, 2022, Strauss Israel issued a nationwide recall in the U.S. for dozens of Elite® chocolate and candy products that may be contaminated with Salmonella bacteria.

What is the Problem?

No illnesses were reported. Instead, the recall was issued after Salmonella was found in the liquid chocolate that was used in finished products, as well as inside the facility.

Strauss Factory Shut Down for 3 Months

Inspectors shut down the facility in Israel after finding numerous food safety violations. Out of 300 samples in the facility, 30 were positive for traces of Salmonella. Inspectors also found pigeons in the factory and construction work, but no food safety director on site.

What Products Were Recalled?

The nationwide recall involves dozens of kosher chocolate and candy products under multiple brand-names, including all product codes currently on the U.S. market. These products include:

• Elite Wafers
• Energy Grain Snacks
• Energy Chocolate Rice Cakes
• Chewing Gum (Elite®, Must®, Bazooka® brands)

Where Was The Recalled Candy Sold?

Strauss distributed the recalled products nationwide in the U.S. and online, including stores like Walmart, but primarily in the Tri-State area of New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, California, and Florida.

Candy Recalls Linked to Salmonella

The recall from Strauss Israel comes amid another massive candy recall involving Salmonella from Kinder. As of mid-April 2022, Kinder chocolates were linked to more than 150 illnesses in 11 countries, with most of the victims under 10 years old.

Salmonella poses a much higher risk of causing severe infections in children than adults, especially very young children, who can rapidly develop a life-threatening case of dehydration due to serious vomiting and diarrhea.
