Houston ISD Joins Nationwide Group of School Districts Filing Lawsuits Against Social Media

In February 2025, the Houston ISD joined a nationwide group of over 200 school districts in filing lawsuits against social media companies.

For example, an article published by the National Institutes of Health warned that the risks may outweigh the benefits for students:

“Social media can also reduce cognition and enhance academic distraction which can lead to poor performance in academic engagements. Psychological issues such as depression, anxiety, sleep disorders or exposure to health risks such as smoking and alcoholism may follow poor academic outcomes.”

What Do Lawsuits Claim?

School districts claim that social media platforms are interfering with students’ ability to focus and learn, and causing a mental health crisis for young people. A lawyer for the school district said: “Social media is absolutely an attention killer for kids.”

Social Media and Youth Mental Health Crisis

Previous generations have dealt with issues surrounding technology addiction, such as TV and video games — but social media mixed with smartphones has made it impossible for kids to distance themselves from the distraction, even if they want to get away.

What is the Problem?

This near-constant proximity to social media has been exacerbated by the way the platforms are designed. Algorithms track their clicks, comments, posts, views, and other actions to fine-tune what content they see next. It does not take long for the platform to become impossible for a young person to resist. This can lead to addiction.

What is Addiction?

Social media addiction is a psychological disorder that is characterized by persistent, intense urges to engage with social media platforms, despite the negative consequences or substantial harm.

Using social media too much is not just a bad habit. Even adults have a hard time pulling their eyes away from their phones. For children, social media overuse can quickly spiral out of control. During a time when young people are figuring out their identity, the wrong influences from social media content can easily lead to lifelong problems with depression, self-esteem, body image, eating disorders, and more.

Why Is Social Media So Dangerous?

Social media is extremely dangerous when kids are viewing negative content on social media — such as bullying comments from their peers, photographs that idealize certain body-types or achievements, unfair comparisons to their peers that cause feelings of low self-esteem, body dysmorphia, or severe depression that leads to suicide.

There are also notorious examples of children who engaged in social media “challenges” after viewing viral videos, such as the “Blackout Challenge” or “Kia Boyz” videos that spurred joyriding auto thefts.

Now, school districts nationwide are fighting back. The Houston ISD is the largest public school system in Texas and the 8th-largest nationwide, with approximately 200,000 students enrolled at 274 schools in the city of Houston, Texas and several nearby cities.

Lawsuits Against Social Media Companies

Social media companies are facing lawsuits from parents and school districts nationwide. The lawsuits blame social media for a youth mental health crisis that is severely harming children and teenagers.

The lawsuits name social media platforms that are used by millions of young people in Texas, such as:
