UPDATE: Snapchat Car Accident Lawsuits

A growing number of car accident lawsuits have been filed against Snapchat after the “Speed Filter” caused numerous high-speed crashes. The controversial Speed Filter would post current speeds on photos and videos, and give out trophies, which critics say encouraged young drivers to drive recklessly.

Snapchat Lawsuit Filed for Teenage Girl’s Suicide

In January 2022, a lawsuit was filed against Snap Inc. by the mother of an 11-year-old girl who blamed Snapchat for her daughter’s suicide.

The lawsuit claims that the girl “struggled for more than two years with an extreme addiction to Instagram and Snapchat.” She suffered from severe depression, mental health problems, sleep deprivation, school absences, and eating disorders, before her tragic suicide in July 2021.

Another Snapchat Lawsuit Filed for Mental Health Issues

In January 2022, another angry parent filed a lawsuit blaming Snapchat for her child’s mental health issues. According to the lawsuit, the teenage girl developed a severe eating disorder “due to her obsessive social media use” and had to be hospitalized twice.

What is Snapchat?

Snapchat is a social media app in which users share pictures and videos (called “snaps”) that are only available for a short time before they disappear. Snapchat has over 100 million users in the U.S., mostly teenagers and young adults under 25 years old.

What is the Problem?

Social media apps are addictive by design. They can certainly have positive effects, like helping people stay connected to friends who are far away — but social media can also have a dark side.

Young people can easily spend hours scrolling through their phone, becoming more and more addicted as they consume content from friends, celebrities, and brands.

They can also develop mental health disorders (anxiety, body image issues, depression etc.) as their emotions become manipulated by the content they view and the responses they get.

Mental Health Risks of Using Social Media

  • Suicide
  • Suicidal ideation / attempts
  • Self-harm
  • Depression
  • Emotional disorders (anxiety, low self-esteem, etc.)
  • Eating disorders (anorexia, bulimia, binge eating, etc.)
  • Body Dysmorphic Disorder
  • Sexual abuse or exploitation
  • Other mental health issues
  • And more
