UPDATE: Deadly Listeria Outbreak Linked to Rizo Lopez Foods
In January 2024, health officials linked a long-running Listeria outbreak to cheese and dairy products made by Rizo Lopez Foods.
Two people died and at least 23 people were hospitalized with severe Listeria infections, according to the CDC Outbreak Investigation. Health officials previously investigated this same outbreak in 2017 and 2021, but did not have recall a specific product.

Dairy products from Rizo Lopez Foods have been linked to 23 illnesses in 11 states between June 2014 and December 2023: California (8), Arizona (4), Colorado (4), Texas (2), Tennessee (2) and Florida (1), Georgia (1), North Carolina (1), Nevada (1), Oregon (1) and Washington (1).
Rizo Lopez Foods Recalls All Dairy Products
In February 2024, Rizo Lopez Foods recalled all of their cheeses and dairy products due to Listeria contamination. The company explained that their products “may be a potential source of illness in an ongoing nationwide Listeria monocytogenes outbreak.”

Rizo Lopez Foods Recalls Cotija Cheese
In January 2024, Rizo Lopez Foods recalled Aged Cotija Mexican Grating Cheese after a product that was sent to Hawaii tested positive for Listeria monocytognes. Further testing determined that the strain of Listeria matched a strain that was making people sick, which led to a recall for all dairy products made by Rizo Lopez Foods.
