Rizo Bros Cotija Aged Mexican Cheese Recalled for Listeria

In January 2024, Rizo Lopez Foods announced a recall for 8-oz. packages of Aged Cotija Mexican Grating Cheese because of a possible risk of contamination with Listeria monocytogenes.

What Cheese Was Recalled?

The recall involves “Rizo Bros California Creamery Cotija” in 8-oz “puck”-shaped packages wrapped in plastic. The cheese is also labeled as “Aged Mexican Grating Cheese” and “Made with Grade A Milk.” The cheese was distributed nationwide.

The recalled cheese is labeled with UPC 72724200043 and batch number 4DW-23318. Batch number is identified on the outer edge of the clear plastic with “SELL BY 05/12/24 BATCH 4DW-23318” in black lettering.

What Happened?

There were no reports of Listeria infection as of January 2024. Instead, the recall was issued after health officials in Hawaii reported that a random sample of cotija cheese was positive for Listeria.

The Hawaii State Department of Health reported that a sample of Aged Cojita Mexican Grating Cheese was positive for Listeria on January 3.

According to Hawaiian health officials, the recalled cheese was sold at retailers in Hawaiʻi such as R. Field Wine Company, select Foodland and Foodland Farms supermarkets, and Cost.U.Less in Hilo.

Rizo Lopez Foods said it has stopped production and distribution of the cheese while they investigate the source of the contamination.

What Should I Do?

Rizo Lopez Foods is asking consumers who bought Aged Cotija Mexican Grating Cheese (8oz). to quarantine the product and destroy it. Consumers with questions may contact the company at 1-800-626-5587, Monday through Friday, 8:00am-5:00pm Pacific Standard Time.
