Proquin and Nerve Damage

Proquin XR is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic. All drugs in this class have carried warnings about peripheral neuropathy, a serious type of nerve damage, since 2004. In August 2013, the FDA issued a Safety Communication and emphasized that nerve damage can occur within days and cause permanent complications.

In fact, a study published in 2001 involving 45 cases of antibiotic-induced nerve damage found that many reports were “severe events that typically involved multiple organ systems” and over half of patients still had symptoms after one year.

Symptoms of Peripheral Neuropathy

Peripheral neuropathy damages sensory nerves in the arms and legs, causing debilitating symptoms such as:

  • Muscle weakness and atrophy
  • Twitching
  • Numbness or feeling like you are wearing gloves or socks
  • Tingling, prickling, or “pins and needles”
  • Chronic pain (especially at night)
  • Loss of sensation of touch, texture, temperature, or pain
  • Trouble balancing or sensing body position
  • And more

Proquin and Aortic Aneurysms

Aortic aneurysms occur when a weak section of the aorta enlarges or “balloons” outward. It can grow unnoticed for years without causing symptoms, especially in people with high blood pressure. When an aneurysm ruptures, it causes severe internal bleeding.

The aorta is a major blood vessel that has collagen in the arterial wall. Proquin is known to damage collagen in connective tissue, which is why it is associated with tendonitis, tendon ruptures, and retinal detachments. A growing number of studies suggest that fluoroquinolone antibiotics like Proquin increase the risk of aortic aneurysms:

  • JAMA Internal Medicine: Researchers in Taiwan found a 2.4-fold increased risk of aortic aneurysms within 60 days of using a fluoroquinolone antibiotic.
  • British Medical Journal: Researchers found a 3-fold increased risk of aortic aneurysms in a study of 650,000 people on fluoroquinolone antibiotics, including 1.1% (18,500 people) who had an aortic aneurysm.

What is the problem?

The Clark Firm, LLP is nationally recognized as a class action law firm. However, at this time our lawyers are filing individual lawsuits rather than a Proquin class action. We always provide free case evaluations, and we are investigating lawsuits involving nerve damage (peripheral neuropathy) and aortic aneurysms.

About Class Actions

A class action is a procedure for handling lawsuits involving a large number of people. The “class representative” files a lawsuit on behalf of themselves and everyone else who was injured by a defendant’s misconduct — fraud, discrimination, or selling defective products, for example.

Why Our Law Firm is Filing Individual Lawsuits as Opposed to a Class Action

Consumer class actions rarely go to trial, and any compensation awarded must be shared among everyone who joins the lawsuit. Class actions are not designed to maximize the payout for everyone in the lawsuit. Instead, they are designed to maximize efficiency.

This approach can have disadvantages for individuals with very serious injuries. They may have to accept “low-ball” settlements or higher attorneys’ fees, all without ever seeing their case taken to trial.

Instead of a class action, our lawyers file individual lawsuits. We focus our efforts on helping people who were injured by side effects of dangerous medications. We hold pharmaceutical companies accountable for failing to warn about side effects. If you were injured, you could receive compensation for your injury, medical expenses, and more.
