Pillsbury Flour Recalled for E. coli

June 14, 2019 — Hometown Food Co., a customer of ADM Milling Co., has recalled 5-pound bags of Pillsbury Best Bread Flour due to a possible risk of E. coli contamination.

The recall involves flour with UPC Code 0 5150020031 5 and the following lot codes and use-by dates, which are printed under the Nutrition Facts:

• Lot Code: 8 342 with Use-By Date: JUN 08 2020
• Lot Code: 8 343 with Use-By Date: JUN 09 2020

What is the Problem?

Pillsbury Best bread flour was shipped to stores and distributors in Connecticut, Delaware, Maryland, Maine, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Virginia.

Pillsbury All-Purpose Flour was also recalled in January 2019 due to a possible risk of Salmonella contamination.

What is the Problem?

The recalled flour may be contaminated with E. coli. It was manufactured at a mill in Buffalo, New York, operated by ADM Milling Co.

The same mill produced wheat that has tested positive for E. coli and linked to an ongoing outbreak of illnesses. Recalls have also been issued by ALDI Baker’s Corner® and King Arthur® brands.

How Many People Are Sick?

The ongoing outbreak of E. coli illnesses has sickened at least 17 people in 8 states since December 2018, according to an outbreak investigation by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Symptoms of E. coli Food Poisoning

E. coli infections produce different symptoms for each person, but commonly cause severe stomach cramps, bloody diarrhea, and vomiting. About 5-10% of people develop a potentially deadly type of kidney failure called Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS).
