Papa Murphy’s Cookie Dough Linked to Salmonella Outbreak
In May 2023, an outbreak of Salmonella was linked to raw cookie dough from Papa Murphy’s Take ‘N’ Bake Pizza, including Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough and S’mores Bar Dough. These are raw products that are supposed to be cooked before they are eaten.
How Many People Got Sick?
No illnesses were reported in Texas, but health officials said there were likely many more illnesses and states involved in the outbreak than what was confirmed.
A total of 26 confirmed illnesses were reported between February and May 2023 in six states, including: California (2), Idaho (5), Missouri (1), Oregon (8), Utah (4), and Washington (6). No deaths were reported, but 4 people had to be hospitalized due to severe food poisoning.
In interviews with health officials, 15 people said they ate Papa Murphy’s raw chocolate chip cookie dough or raw S’mores bars dough before they got sick. One person ate baked cookies made with Papa Murphy’s chocolate chip cookie dough.
Food Poisoning from Cookie Dough
Raw dough is a recurrent source of food poisoning due to ingredients like eggs and flour, which may be contaminated with bacteria like Salmonella and E. coli if they are not fully cooked. Some cookie dough products are heat-treated and made to be eaten, but Papa Murphy’s sold raw cookie dough products.
Papa Murphy’s Cookie Dough Must Be Fully Cooked Before Eating
Papa Murphy’s labeled their cookie dough and S’mores Bars dough with the warning: “Bake before consuming.” The products also carried instruction for cooking and baking at temperatures ranging from 350ºF to 375ºF. Despite this, people could still fall ill from cross-contamination in the kitchen or accidental under-cooking.
Warning Signs & Symptoms of Severe Salmonella
The CDC warns consumers to contact a healthcare provider immediately if you have any symptoms of a severe Salmonella infection, such as:
- Diarrhea and fever higher than 102ºF
- Diarrhea for more than 3 days that is not improving
- Bloody diarrhea
- So much vomiting that you cannot keep liquids down
- Signs of dehydration, such as:
- Not peeing much
