What is Stevens-Johnson Syndrome?

Stevens-Johnson Syndrome (SJS) is a severe allergic reaction that causes a skin rash. It can also affect mucous membranes in the eyes, mouth, nose, throat, intestines, genitals, or lungs. Symptoms begin with a flu-like illness and a painful rash. The rash spreads rapidly (within hours or days), blisters develop, and the top layer of skin (epidermis) dies and peels off the body. Mild cases of SJS that are caused by infections rather than medications are also known as erythema multiforme.

Motrin and Stevens-Johnson Syndrome (SJS)

Motrin is a painkiller that contains ibuprofen, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). This class of drugs has been on the market for decades. Evidence linking ibuprofen and SJS dates back to the 1980s. Younger patients are especially vulnerable.

FDA Orders Stronger Warnings

In 2005, the FDA ordered manufacturers of ibuprofen painkillers to update warning labels to include an “allergy alert” and “descriptions of early symptoms associated with Stevens-Johnson syndrome.”

Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis

SJS involves a skin rash on 10% of the body or less. When the rash covers at least 30% of the skin, SJS is called Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis (TEN). Approximately one-third of cases of TEN are deadly. Another name for TEN is Lyell’s syndrome, after Dr. Alan Lyell, a doctor who described TEN for the first time in the 1950s.

Complications of SJS

SJS causes death in around 5-15% of cases. Many people develop severe complications, such as:

  • Dehydration and malnutrition
  • Scarring and disfigurement
  • Infections
  • Vision loss or blindness
  • Organ damage
  • Intestinal problems
  • Shock
  • Multi-organ system failure
