December 4, 2017 — A man from Texas has filed a lawsuit accusing Monsanto of failing to warn about the risk of cancer from Roundup (glyphosate) weed-killer.
The lawsuit was filed by Kevin M., a man from Texas who used Roundup for over 20 years until developing non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.
Monsanto is accused of selling Roundup and other glyphosate-based herbicides without warnings about cancer, despite substantial evidence linking glyphosate with the development of lymphoma.
He began using Roundup around 2001 and was regularly exposed to it because Monsanto failed to provide precautionary instructions. Instead, Monsanto advertised Roundup as “safer than table salt.”
He says he first learned about the link between Roundup and non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in 2015, after the World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) upgraded glyphosate to a “probable human carcinogen” based on studies in the U.S., Canada, and Sweden linking it with higher rates of lymphoma.
According to the lawsuit:
Despite the fact that Defendant knew or should have known that Roundup caused, or could cause, unreasonably dangerous side effects, Defendant continued and continues to market, manufacture, distribute, and/or sell Roundup to consumers, including the Plaintiff.”
Hundreds of lawsuits have now been filed against Monsanto by farmers, agricultural workers, home gardeners, and other people who developed lymphoma after years of routinely using Roundup.
The litigation also sparked safety concerns in the European Union (EU), with France and other nations announcing that Roundup will be gradually phased out and banned over the next few years.
The lawsuit was filed on November 17, 2017 in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Missouri — Case No.: 4:17-CV-2728.
