December 2017 — The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is warning consumers not to use Limbrel due to the risk of severe, life-threatening side effects. The FDA has also asked the company that manufactures Limbrel, Primus Pharmaceuticals, to voluntarily recall Limbrel due to safety risks — but Limbrel remains for sale without warnings about side effects.

The FDA reported nearly 200 cases in which people who took Limbrel developed severe side effects, including life-threatening cases of drug-induced liver injury and a serious lung condition known as hypersensitivity pneumonitis. People who develop either of these side effects can develop permanent organ damage or even death.
