Limbrel Linked to Life-Threatening Health Problems

In December 2017, the FDA announced a Safety Alert about life-threatening side effects of Limbrel250® and Limbrel500® arthritis capsules.

“The FDA reminds consumers not to use Limbrel because of the risk of drug-induced liver injury, and a lung condition called hypersensitivity pneumonitis. Consumers taking this product should stop immediately and contact their health care provider.”

The two most serious side effects of Limbrel are drug-induced liver injury, and a lung condition called hypersensitivity pneumonitis.

FDA Asks Manufacturer for Voluntary Limbrel Recall

Limbrel is made by Primus Pharmaceuticals in Scottsdale, Arizona. The FDA has asked the company to voluntarily recall Limbrel, but it has not been taken off the market. The FDA warns that Limbrel is an unapproved new drug that is being advertised as a “medical food.”

What is Limbrel?

Limbrel is a capsule that is advertised to manage the metabolic process that causes osteoarthritis. It is linked to at least 194 reports of people who suffered severe side effects, with a wide range of injuries.

What Ingredients Are In Limbrel?

The FDA is currently reviewing the ingredients in Limbrel. The label claims that both formulas (Limbrel250 and Limbrel500) contain zinc and the following types of flavonoids: baicalin (from Scutellaria baicalensis) and catechin (from Acacia catechu).

Drug-Induced Liver Injury

Limbrel is associated with liver damage, according to the FDA. Liver damage is often diagnosed when blood tests show elevated blood-levels of AST and ALT. The symptoms may also include loss of appetite, itching, fatigue, and nausea.

Hypersensitivity Pneumonitis

Hypersensitivity pneumonitis is a lung disease that occurs when the immune system over-reacts to a substance in the body and triggers inflammation. Over time, inflammation in the lungs can cause scarring, irreversible lung damage, and severe breathing problems.
