FDA Cracks Down on Kratom Companies

June 2019 — The FDA sent warning letters to two companies who were illegally advertising unapproved kratom products for opioid withdrawal, addition, depression, anxiety and cancer. The companies incude:

  • Cali Botanicals of Folsom, California
  • Kratom NC of Wilmington, North Carolina

What is Kratom?

Kratom is the common name for Mitragyna speciosa, a plant found naturally in Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia and Papua New Guinea. In the United States, kratom is used by recreational drug users, and as an “opioid withdrawal drug.” Kratom acts on the same opioid brain receptors as morphine. Using kratom may alleviate opioid withdrawal, but it can also lead to addiction, abuse and dependence.

Kratom Salmonella Outbreak

Kratom supplements have been linked to a Salmonella outbreak that has sickened at least 199 people in 41 states, with 50 people hospitalized, according to an investigation by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Sunstone Organics Recalls Kratom for Salmonella Risk

In March 2019, Sunstone Organics has recalled two types of kratom powder and capsules due to a risk of Salmonella contamination: White Vein Kratom Lot 119 and Maeng Da Kratom Lot 124A. The kratom products were distributed in Oregon, Washington, California, and Nebraska. Click here to read more.

FDA Orders Kratom Recall

The FDA has ordered a mandatory recall for kratom due to the risk of Salmonella. At least 37 different kratom-containing products have tested positive for Salmonella, according to the FDA.
