Jule’s Foods Recall

On April 22, 2021, Jule’s Foods of Carlsbad, California, recalled all of their products due to a risk of Salmonella bacteria contamination.

What is the Problem?

The recall was issued after a multi-state outbreak of Salmonella was linked to Jule’s Cashew Brie, which is a type of vegan cheese. In response, Jule’s Foods recalled all of their products, including:

  • Jule’s Cashew Brie
  • Jule’s Truffle Cashew Brie
  • Jule’s Black Garlic Cashew Brie
  • Jule’s Artichoke Spinach Dip
  • Jule’s Vegan Ranch Dressing

How Many Salmonella Illnesses Were Reported?

As of May 7, 2021, the CDC has reported 7 illnesses in 3 states, including California (4), Tennessee (2), and Florida (1). The outbreak strains include Salmonella Duisburg and Salmonella Urbana.

Furthermore, a sample of Jule’s Cashew Brie tested positive for Salmonella Urbana, which is the same strain that made people sick. The samples of Jule’s Cashew Brie were tested independently by health officials in Tennessee and California.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) also linked Jule’s Cashew Brie to an outbreak of Salmonella Duisburg, which is a rare strain of Salmonella. Three out of 5 sick people who were interviewed said they ate Jule’s Cashew Brie before falling ill.

Jule’s Foods vegan products were distributed in Texas and other states, including Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Louisiana, Maryland, Minnesota, Nevada New York, New Jersey, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Tennessee, and directly to consumers nationwide.
