Amazon Sued Over Instant Pot That Opens While Pressurized
In March 2026, a lawsuit was filed in U.S. District Court in Colorado against Amazon.com, Inc. alleging that the Instant Pot Duo 6-Quart Electric Pressure Cooker (specifically the Duo 60 V3 model) is defectively designed because its lid can be rotated and removed while the unit is still under pressure.
The lawsuit was filed on March 20, 2026 in the U.S. District Court for the District of Colorado – Case Number 1:26-cv-011460RBJ.
Who Filed The Lawsuit?
The plaintiff, a Colorado resident, alleges he was burned on April 7, 2024, while using the cooker for its normal intended purpose of preparing a meal. When the lid rotated open while the unit was still pressurized, scalding hot food and steam were forcefully ejected, causing serious burn injuries.
Who Was The Lawsuit Filed Against?
Instant Brands, Inc. (the original manufacturer of the Instant Pot) filed for bankruptcy in 2023 and is currently protected by an automatic stay. Under Colorado law, Amazon is deemed the product’s manufacturer and is the sole defendant in this case.
What Is the Defect?
The Instant Pot Duo’s user manual tells consumers that a Float Valve safety mechanism locks the lid in place while the unit is pressurized, and that the lid “cannot be opened” until the float valve drops and all pressure is released.
The lawsuit alleges this safety mechanism failed during normal use, allowing the lid to be rotated with normal force while dangerous pressure remained inside the cooker.
The complaint further alleges that safer alternative designs were available and that Amazon knew or should have known about the defect, but continued selling the product without a redesign or adequate warnings to consumers.
When a pressurized cooker opens unexpectedly, the sudden release of trapped steam and scalding liquid can cause serious burns to the hands, arms, face, and chest — injuries that often require significant medical treatment and can result in permanent scarring.
Which Products Are Affected?
- Product: Instant Pot DUO 6-Quart Electric Pressure Cooker
- Specific model identified in lawsuit: Duo 60 V3
- Sold by: Amazon.com and other retailers
- Distributed by: Instant Pot Brands, Chicago, IL
Where Was It Sold?
The Instant Pot Duo has been one of the best-selling kitchen appliances in the country for years, sold heavily through Amazon.com as well as major retailers across Texas, including Walmart, Target, Costco, and H-E-B.
The Duo 60 V3 model was widely available and sold in high volumes across the country, including throughout Houston, Dallas, San Antonio, Austin, and other Texas markets.
If you have an Instant Pot Duo that you believe opened or could be rotated while still pressurized, stop using the pressure cooking function and contact a lawyer about your legal options. Do not discard the unit — it may be needed as evidence.
How Many People in Texas Were Injured?
The lawsuit currently before the Colorado federal court involves one plaintiff, but pressure cooker burn injuries from the Instant Pot have been reported by consumers across the country, including Texas.
Given how widely the Instant Pot Duo was sold in Texas, the number of affected Texans could be significant.
Burn injuries from pressure cooker explosions or unexpected lid openings are often under-reported. Many consumers do not realize the defect was the issue, and others do not know that they may have legal recourse. If you or a family member was burned when an Instant Pot opened while still under pressure, our lawyers want to hear from you.
Legal Help for Pressure Cooker Burn Victims in Texas
Texas families rely on pressure cookers every day to prepare meals quickly and efficiently, and the Instant Pot Duo became a household staple across the state. When a product that was supposed to be “safe” instead allows a pressurized lid to open during normal cooking, the consequences can be devastating.
How Serious Are Burn injuries From Pressure Cookers?
Serious burns from a pressure cooker explosion can require emergency medical care, skin grafting, and long-term rehabilitation. Victims may face mounting medical bills, time away from work, and lasting physical and emotional pain. Texans who were burned by a defective Instant Pot pressure cooker may be entitled to compensation for these damages.
