Instant Brands Linked to Austin Woman’s Burn Injury Lawsuit

On July 23, 2026, a pressure cooker lawsuit was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Texas (Austin Division) by a woman who was burned by an Instant Pot Duo Nova 60 Pressure Cooker.

The case names Instant Brands LLC, Instant Brands, Inc. and Corelle Brands, LLC as defendants.

According to the complaint, the incident occurred on July 18, 2021, when she was cooking with her Instant Pot at home. She was reportedly able to twist open the lid when it was pressurized, which resulted in the scalding-hot contents being forcefully expelled onto her body.

What Is the Danger With the Instant Pot Duo Nova?

The lawsuit alleges that the Duo Nova’s lid can be rotated and twisted open with normal force when there is pressure, heat, and steam trapped inside the pot. This is a problem, because Instant Brands advertised the Duo Nova’s “10 safety features,” including features to prevent the lid from opening prematurely.

When a pressurized lid opens, the escaping cloud of scalding-hot steam and food can blast out of the pot. Anyone nearby can be scalded, burned by liquid, or suffer deeper burns when sticky food lands on their clothing or body.

The user manual warns that opening the appliance before it has fully depressurized can result in serious injury. The potential burn hazards include:

  • Second and third-degree burns from ejected food or liquid
  • Scalding to the face, hands, and torso
  • Permanent scarring in severe cases

Which Instant Pot Models Are Affected?

The Instant Pot Duo Nova is a multi-cooker that is sold in 3, 6, 8 and 10-quart sizes. This product includes models such as the:

  • Instant Pot Duo Nova 60 (6-quart, the model at issue in this lawsuit)
  • Instant Pot Duo Nova Mini (3-quart)
  • Instant Pot Duo Nova 80 (8-quart)
  • Instant Pot Duo Nova 100 (10-quart)

How Did This Case End Up Back in Court in 2026?

The plaintiff first filed her lawsuit in March 2024, shortly after Instant Brands entered Chapter 11 bankruptcy. Bankruptcy proceedings automatically paused the case, and it was dismissed without prejudice in 2025 while the company reorganized.

A bankruptcy court order allowed the litigation stay on product liability claims to lift as of July 9, 2026, clearing the way for the Austin woman to refile her lawsuit against Instant Brands this July.
