3rd-Degree Burn Injuries Linked to iHEAT Insole Explosion

In December 2021, an outdoorsman from Minnesota suffered 2nd- and 3rd-degree burn injuries when his iHEAT Heated Insole exploded.

Tyler Morris, a man from Trimont, Minnesota, said he bought the rechargeable heated insoles from amazon.com for hunting and fishing. While setting up a fish house on a lake on December 12, 2024, one of the insoles exploded — and it was not even turned on.

He warned other people about the burn hazards of battery-powered heated clothing, which are growing more popular in Minnesota and other states with freezing cold winter weather.

Morris told local news station KARE 11, “I started freaking out. It felt like a knife stabbing my heel. … Smoke started billowing out of my boot, and I had to kick it off as fast as I could.”

Doctors Warn: “Stay Away” From Battery-Powered Heated Clothing

Local hospitals are seeing an influx of patients with similar burn injuries from heated insoles and other battery-powered clothing that exploded, caught on fire, overheated, or malfunctioned.

Doctors at the Hennepin Healthcare Burn Center in Minneapolis are warning to “stay away” from heated insoles:

“We’ve had three patients since the beginning of winter already come in with varying degrees of burns on the lower extremities from 1st to 3rd-degree, and it is from these insoles malfunctioning or even exploding. Our medical staff was kind of shocked.”

What Are iHEAT Heated Insoles?

iHEAT Heated Insoles are battery-powered heated insoles that provide cushioning and warmth in the footpad of shoes or boots. They have been sold on Amazon.com, Ebay.com, and iHEATgroup.com.

iHEAT sells a variety of battery-powered heated clothing products, such as:

  • iHEAT Heated Insoles
  • iHEAT Heated Socks
  • iHEAT Heated Jackets
  • iHEAT Heated Gloves
  • iHEAT Heated Vest
  • And more

How Do They Work?

iHEAT Heated Insoles are powered by a lithium-ion battery pack that is built into the insole cushion. There are three temperature settings and the insoles come with a remote control to adjust the heat. To recharge the insoles, consumers can plug the insoles into a power outlet with a USB wire that connects to a port on the back of the heel.

Who Uses Heated Insoles & Socks?

iHEAT Heated Insoles and other battery-powered heated clothing, such as heated socks, can provide hours of warmth in freezing temperatures. They are especially popular for people who work outdoors or do recreational activities like fishing, hunting, and skiing. Heated insoles and socks are also used to prevent numb toes, especially by people with poor circulation, or other foot-related medical conditions.

Lithium-Ion Battery Fires & Explosions

Lithium-ion batteries are small, lightweight, and powerful, which is why they are ideal for electronic devices like heated insoles and other types of clothing. The problem is that lithium-ion batteries also pose a serious burn hazard if they explode, overheat, or catch on fire.

What is the Problem?

One of the biggest hazards of battery-powered clothing is that the lithium-ion battery is usually directly up against the user’s skin. If the battery explodes, there is little to protect a person from severe burns.

The burns may be even more severe if the battery fire occurs in an insole, which may be trapped inside a person’s shoes. They will likely be unable to remove their s hoes before they are severely burned.

Heated Clothing Can Catch Fire While You Are Wearing It

Battery fires could also melt other clothing the victim is wearing, especially clothing that is made of a synthetic material (such as polyester) that will sticks to the skin when it melts. Clothing made of natural fibers could also catch on fire and cause 3rd-degree burns.

People who are unlucky enough to be wearing a lithium-ion battery when it explodes may suffer from devastating, excruciatingly painful burn injuries. The most severe 3rd-degree burns cause full-thickness skin damage, permanent scarring, disfigurement, and disability.
