iHEAT Heated Insoles Linked to Fires & Burn Injuries
In July 2025, safety officials warned people to immediately stop using iHEAT Heated Insoles due to a risk of severe burn injuries and a fire hazard from the defective lithium-ion battery.
How Many People Were Burned?
iHEAT Heated Insoles have been linked to 11 reports of fires, explosions, and other incidents, including several reports of people who suffered severe 3rd-degree burn injuries.
According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC):
“CPSC has received 11 reports of fires, explosions and other thermal incidents involving the defective heated insoles, including 8 reports of burn injuries, with some injuries being 2nd- and 3rd-degree burns.”
What is the Problem?
The battery can explode or catch on fire, even when the insoles are turned off. If the battery explodes when it is being worn, a person can suffer extremely serious, life-threatening burn injuries to their foot.
Where Were They Sold?
iHEAT Heated Insoles were sold on Amazon from November 2022 through July 2024 for between $48 and $80.
iHEAT Heated Insoles Can Explode Even When Turned Off
iHEAT Heated Insoles contain a defective internal lithium-ion battery that can overheat, catch on fire, or explode inside a person’s shoes or boots — or even when the insoles are turned off and not being worn.
Lithium-ion battery fires are extremely dangerous due to the chemicals in the battery. If these fires occur inside a confined space like a shoe, they can cause 3rd-degree burns (full skin-thickness) within seconds.
By the time a person takes off their shoes or boots to remove the battery, they may already have severe burns on their foot or leg. The fire may also cause severe burn injuries to their face, hands, arms, or body as they attempt to remove the battery from their shoes or boots.
What are iHEAT Heated Insoles?
iHEAT Heated Insoles are battery-powered insoles that are used to warm up a person’s shoes or boots, typically to prevent numbness or cold toes when working or doing recreational activities in the winter.
The insoles were sold in black or red, with an internal lithium-ion battery that is sewn into the bottom of the foam footpad. They are powered by a remote control. “iHEAT” may be printed on the sole.
How Does It Work?
iHEAT Heated Insoles are manufactured with a soft foam cushion, like a traditional insole, but they also contain a rechargeable lithium-ion battery that powers the heating elements. The temperature setting is controlled with a remote control. The battery cannot be removed from the insoles, but it can be recharged with a USB cord.
Can I Get a Refund?
No. iHEAT, which is a manufacturer based in China, has been “unresponsive” to requests for a recall or more information, according to the CPSC. Consumers should dispose of their iHEAT Heated Insoles according to local procedures for lithium-ion batteries.
