Texas Hit Hard in Onion Salmonella Outbreak

October 22, 2021 — Onions from Mexico have been linked to an outbreak of Salmonella in dozens of states, with 158 illnesses reported in Texas.

As of October 20, at least 652 people in 37 states have been infected with the outbreak strain of Salmonella Oranienburg between May 31 and September 20, 2021.

Fresh whole red, white, and yellow onions were imported to the U.S. by ProSource Inc and distributed to restaurants and grocery stores. They were grown in Chihuahua, Mexico and shipped between July 1, 2021, and August 31, 2021.

ProSource issued a recall for onions that were sold to distributors and the following brands:

• Big Bull
• Peak Fresh Produce
• Sierra Madre
• Markon First Crop.
• Markon Essentials
• Rio Blue
• ProSource
• Rio Valley
• Sysco Imperial

The onions were distributed to wholesalers, broadline foodservice customers, and retail stores in 50 lb., 25 lb., 10 lb., 5 lb., 3 lb., and 2 lb. mesh sacks; and 50 lb., 40 lb., 25 lb., 10 lb., and 5 lb. cartons.

ProSource said the onions were last imported on August 27, but because they can last up to 3 months in storage, restaurants and consumers may still have them.

The onions might have a sticker that is labeled with “ProSource” and “Mexico,” but to be safe, health officials are recommending that consumers and businesses throw out any unmarked onions if you do not know where they are from.

In interviews, 145 people reported eating or maybe eating raw onions (or dishes that likely contained raw onions) before they got sick. Several people reported eating at the same restaurants.

The outbreak strain of Salmonella Oranienburg was found in a condiment container with leftover lime and cilantro, which previously had onions.

Last year, onions were linked to another large outbreak of Salmonella. By October 2020, there were 1,127 people in 48 states who were infected with Salmonella Newport — but only 2 illnesses were reported in Texas.
