E. coli Outbreak Linked to Frozen Blueberries Sold at Publix

In July 2026, Publix grocery stores announced a recall for all lots of its GreenWise Organic Whole Blueberries and Whole Mixed Berries after they were linked to an E. coli outbreak.

The FDA Outbreak Investigation identified a cluster of E. coli O145 illnesses in people who reported eating the frozen blueberries before their symptoms began. Publix said it ended sales of the product at the end of June, before the recall was even announced.

The recall started on July 3, 2026 in an announcement from Frutas y Hortalizas del Sur S.A., the Chilean company that grows and packs the blueberries.

However, the original recall only involved a single lot. On August 4, Publix significantly expanded the recall to include all lots of both products.

What Is the E. Coli Risk?

The strain of E. coli in this outbreak is E. coli O145:H28. It is a Shiga toxin-producing bacteria (STEC) that can cause a severe case of food poisoning. In some cases, people who are infected develop life-threatening or fatal complications.

Symptoms usually begin a few days after eating contaminated food. These symptoms can include:

• Severe stomach cramps
• Diarrhea, which may be bloody
• Vomiting and fever

In more serious cases the infection can lead to Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS), a form of kidney failure that is especially dangerous for young children, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems.

Could Texans Be Affected by This Recall?

Publix does not have stores in Texas, but FDA noted that blueberries from this same grower in Chile may have reached other grocery stores. The FDA will update the advisory as investigators learn more.

How Many People Got Sick?

As of July 30, 2026, health officials have confirmed 12 illnesses in this outbreak so far. All of the victims were residents of Florida and Georgia, with illness onset dates ranging from May 11 through June 5, 2026. Four people had to be hospitalized. No deaths were reported. Official case-counts can miss people who got sick, so the real number of victims could be higher.
